What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal color lithograph surrounded by a wide margin of off-white paper. Along the bottom, its English title is printed in small golden letters. The scene is arranged in horizontal bands, creating a strong sense of depth receding toward the distance. In the immediate foreground, at the bottom of the image, is the upper part of an ancient colonnade seen from above: a thick sandstone architrave, divided into blocks and carried by broad, weathered capitals. Faint hieroglyphs can be made out across the stone, and in the lower left corner a fallen block leans diagonally against the structure. Warm light catches the upper edge, leaving soft shadow beneath. On the left, two or three tiny human figures walk or lean over the stone; their scale makes the architecture appear enormous. Beyond it stretches a dry, dusty ochre plain with low tents, small buildings, and groups of travellers on foot and horseback following a track on the right. Farther away runs the Nile, a grey-blue band carrying sailing boats with triangular sails. Behind the river rise the pale, layered, almost treeless Libyan mountains, beneath a vast greyish sky streaked with thin, elongated pink-tinged clouds.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin in the foreground, with the figures resting on the ancient stonework, and notice how small they make the colonnade feel. Then let your eye cross the plain and the Nile before it reaches the mountains. That slow journey across empty bands of land is what gives the view its sense of immense scale.
ContextContexto
This color lithograph was published in London in 1847 as part of Egypt and Nubia, Volume I. It is based on work by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), transferred to stone by British lithographer Louis Haghe (1806–1885), and published by F. G. Moon of Threadneedle Street. Roberts is known for the drawings he made while travelling through Egypt and the Near East in the late 1830s, later issued as popular prints. From the Temple of Luxor, the view looks across the Nile toward the Libyan mountain chain on the west bank. The impression shown here belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the bequest of John Bonebrake.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although the mountains give the print its title, it is the worn hieroglyphs carved along the foreground architrave that quietly anchor the scene in the Temple of Luxor itself.

From above I look at the sandstone architrave and pause on the bone-colored paper margin around the lithograph. I notice the ochre tones and the 1847 palette that Louis Haghe transferred to stone from David Roberts drawing. I focus on the faint hieroglyphs, the weathered capitals and the soft shadow under the cornice. The fallen block placed diagonally tells me about time and later care. The whole composition breathes serenity and the editorial precision of F. G. Moon.

I am amazed by the horizontal bands that create depth from the Temple of Luxor to the Libyan range. In the distance the Nile appears as a bluish gray band with sailboats carrying triangular sails, and beyond rise pale, stratified mountains under a broad sky with thin pinkish clouds. I picture the warm desert light at dusk and the tiny human scale against the architecture. It is a landscape that invites you to measure distances, horizon and the vastness of the sky.

It feels like I am on top of a giant temple made of stone cookies. Down below there are tiny little people walking and a fallen block that looks like a toy. Farther away I see a yellow plain with little tents, small horses and travelers, then a river with sailboats and in the back light-colored mountains that look like sugar. The sky is huge with pink clouds. Everything looks calm and I want to count the little boats.
