The image is a vertical color lithograph centered on a wide margin of cream paper. A monumental stone building rises in the middle of a Cairo street, seen from slightly below, so the dome and especially the tall minaret on the right stand out against a pale, almost empty gray-beige sky. The facade is built in alternating horizontal bands of cream and reddish-brown stone. On the left, a large dome covered with a fine interlaced geometric pattern sits on an octagonal drum; on the right, the minaret climbs in stacked sections with balconies, small columns, carved decoration, and a bulbous finial. Arched windows, a large recessed arch, wooden lattice screens, and a stepped entrance animate the wall. At street level, in ochre and dusty brown tones, small groups of people talk, sit on the ground, walk, or ride horses and donkeys. Buildings with projecting wooden balconies line both sides and guide the eye into the hazy distance on the left. The light is soft and diffuse, with few hard shadows, and the stone, dust, and paper share a warm, worn texture. Printed captions appear below the image.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the striped stonework and follow its horizontal bands toward the dome and up the minaret. Then come back down to street level, where the small figures give the architecture its scale. Notice how an everyday street passes right beside a funerary monument.

ContextContexto

This color lithograph was published in London in 1848 in *Egypt and Nubia, Volume III*, based on work by Scottish artist David Roberts and produced on stone by lithographer Louis Haghe, with F. G. Moon as publisher, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Roberts traveled through Egypt and the Levant in 1838-1839 making drawings that later became highly popular prints in Britain. The view shows a Mamluk funerary complex in Cairo, in the area traditionally called the Tombs of the Caliphs. Which specific tomb is shown is not identified in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

The alternating light and dark stone courses are known as *ablaq*, a characteristic technique of Mamluk architecture in Egypt and Syria that turns the wall itself into ornament.

I pause on the material of this 1848 lithograph made after David Roberts and transferred to stone by Louis Haghe. Look how the cream and reddish brown stone is printed with alternating bands and how the ochre dust of the street shares its tone with the paper margin. The almost empty gray-beige sky lets the dome with its interlaced pattern and the tall minaret breathe. Notice too the contrast between the precise ink of the carved details and the warm, worn texture created by the soft diffuse light.

What draws me is that pale empty sky Roberts left over Cairo. It looks like a veiled sky, with no sharp sun or stars, with soft light and few hard shadows. Against it stands the minaret in stacked sections ending in a bulbous finial, like an observatory seeking height. The dome on the left and the large recessed arch frame the horizon. It is an urban landscape seen slightly from below, as if we were looking up waiting for something to appear beyond the hazy dust in the background.

This building looks like a cake with cream and reddish brown stripes! On top there is a giant dome with lacy patterns and next to it a super tall minaret with little balconies where you could play lookout. Down below there are tiny people chatting, sitting on the ground or riding horses and donkeys along the dusty street. The houses nearby have wooden balconies that stick out. Everything looks hazy in the distance, like a mysterious street that goes on and on and invites you to keep walking.
