What you would seeLo que verías

The vertical image shows the shaded interior of a vast Egyptian portico, seen from a slightly low viewpoint on its stone floor. Two enormous columns dominate the foreground, one at the far left and one at the right; behind them, other columns recede in rows toward a dark, distant wall. Their thick shafts are completely covered with registers of hieroglyphs, human figures in profile, animals, stars, and geometric bands. At the top they open into wide capitals shaped like plants or bells, supporting heavy beams and a ceiling decorated with winged figures and repeated patterns. The palette is muted: warm beige, sand, sepia, gray, and stone tones, with faint traces of blue and reddish pigment on the carvings. Bright daylight enters from the upper right, striking parts of the capitals and the right-hand column, while the center and background fall into deep shadow. The floor consists of uneven slabs, loose blocks, rubble, and worn steps. Near the center, several very small human figures stand in a group and another person sits beside a column at right, making the architecture appear monumental. In the lower margin, the printed title can barely be read.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tiny figures at the center to grasp the true size of the columns. Then move upward, from the carved shafts to the capitals and the painted ceiling. Finally, notice the cracks, fallen blocks, and worn reliefs: the temple is both a sacred building and a ruin altered by time.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this color lithograph was published in London in 1846 by F. G. Moon, from work by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), with lithography by Louis Haghe (1806–1885). It belongs to volume I of *Egypt and Nubia* and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Roberts traveled through Egypt and Nubia in the late 1830s making drawings that were later turned into prints for a British audience. The view shows the great portico at Philae, an ancient Egyptian temple complex on an island in the Nile, generally associated with worship of the goddess Isis. The exact moment depicted is not documented.

Forma parte del volumen I de *Egypt and Nubia* y hoy pertenece al Cleveland Museum of Art.

The Philae temple complex was dismantled and moved to the nearby island of Agilkia during UNESCO's rescue campaign in the 1970s, before the original site was flooded following construction of the Aswan High Dam.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how the paper holds time, the stone seems to breathe under beige, sand and grey tones with soft traces of blue and reddish pigment that barely survive. The hieroglyphs covering every shaft speak to me of layers of pigment, dust and light entering from the upper right. I observe the vegetal capitals, the decorated ceiling and the uneven floor with loose blocks, all recorded with lithographic precision in 1846 after David Roberts and Louis Haghe. I wonder how to preserve that gloom without erasing its history.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this portico as if it were an inner sky, the columns align like constellations guiding the eye toward the darkness at the back. The strong light washing the capitals from the right reminds me how the sun draws sharp shadows at noon. The registers of stars and winged figures on walls and ceiling make me think about how the ancients at Philae, on that Nile island dedicated to Isis, projected the cosmos onto stone. Here the tiny human scale reminds us how immense the universe is.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Wow, these columns are huge like stone trees covered in little drawings everywhere! I see little faces in profile, tiny animals, little stars and lots of lines telling stories. The ceiling is super high and has wings drawn on it, like it wants to fly. There are little stones scattered on the floor and very dark shadows where it looks like you could hide. The people look super tiny next to the columns, like little ants visiting a huge castle. I like the light coming in and making one part shine.
