What you would seeLo que verías

The horizontal print, set on cream paper with wide, almost empty margins, shows an ancient Egyptian temple seen from the front and slightly from the left, in daylight. At the centre rises a massive stone portico with a flat entablature, sloping walls and four columns with ornate capitals; between them stand lower walls carved with reliefs of human figures in profile. Through the central opening, smaller doorways recede in perspective into a bright interior courtyard. To the left extends a long, plain, sloping wall, partly ruined, which balances the composition. The foreground is rough, uneven ground in beige, grey and sepia washes, with grassy patches, scattered carved blocks fallen on their sides, and a path of flat stones leading to the temple steps. Five small figures animate the scene: one at left gestures with a raised arm while another sits on the ground; two rest in the shade of the portico and a fifth, in dark clothing and a white skirt, descends the steps. The sky is pale, with faint clouds, and low hills fade on the right. At the bottom, beneath the image, a caption reads 'TEMPLE OF WADY DABOD, NUBIA.' The lines are fine, the modelling soft, and the overall tonality warm, dusty and quiet.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the human figures: they are tiny, yet they reveal the monument's scale. Then follow the flat stones in the foreground toward the central doorway, as if walking back into the building. Finally, look closely at the reliefs and capitals: the lithograph records them with archaeological care, but softens them within an idealized landscape.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is 'Temple at Wady Dabod, Nubia', a colour lithograph from 1848, from 'Egypt and Nubia, Volume II', held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. David Roberts (Scottish, 1796–1864) made the original drawing, and Louis Haghe (British, 1806–1885) translated it into lithography. Roberts travelled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838–1839, drawing monuments that then fascinated the European public. The building shown is probably the one now known as the Temple of Debod. The exact circumstances of this sheet's edition are not stated in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Temple of Debod did not stay in Nubia: it was dismantled during the international campaign to save Nubian monuments threatened by the Aswan High Dam, gifted by Egypt to Spain, and rebuilt in Madrid, where it can still be visited today.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I linger on the cream paper and how the beige, grey and sepia washes build the dust and weight of the stone. This 1848 coloured lithograph, after David Roberts drawing and Louis Haghe lithographic work, keeps a fine line and soft modelling. I look at the wide margins, the flat entablature and the fallen blocks in the foreground; everything speaks of time and of a long journey from Nubia to the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am drawn to the bright daylight in this horizontal print. The pale sky with faintly suggested clouds and the luminous inner courtyard opening beyond the portico make me think of the high desert sun. The four-column temple stands sharp and its sloping walls cast short shadows where two tiny figures rest. It is a silent and dusty scene, as if the heat itself had been printed.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a castle for giants! In the middle there are four huge columns with decorations on top and tiny little doors one after another all the way to the back. In front there are fallen stones and a little path going up steps. I like to find the five tiny people: one raises an arm as if waving, another sits on the ground, two are in the little shade and one in a white skirt walks down the steps. Everything looks calm and sunny!
