What you would seeLo que verías

A rectangular tinted lithograph is centered on a larger off-white sheet, with a caption below reading “TEMPLE OF WADY KARDASSY, NUBIA.” Most of the image is a vast, pale beige sky, nearly empty, above a compact ruin placed slightly right of center. The temple stands on a rocky rise: tall stone columns with carved capitals support fragments of an entablature, while lower walls, steps, and a small railing-like balustrade remain between them. On the left, one capital appears carved with a face, catching a sharper highlight than the weathered shafts. The ground is uneven and stony, sketched with dark hatching; two large fallen rectangular blocks lie in the right foreground, and smaller rocks lead the eye down to the left. There, a broad river reflects soft light, with a single tiny sailboat near the shore and low, hazy mountains beyond. Three small human figures, dressed in dark clothing, stand on the steps and at the base of the ruin, giving scale to the masonry. Handwritten inscriptions sit in the lower corners of the plate. Light is diffuse and warm, textures are granular rather than smooth, and everything feels quiet, dry, and still.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the temple at the center, then move left toward the river and the tiny sailboat to feel how scale expands. Next, look for the human figures: they are not the subject, but they make the height of the columns legible. Finally, linger on the empty sky and the fallen blocks in the foreground, which turn a record of architecture into a meditation on time passing.

ContextContexto

This color lithograph comes from Egypt and Nubia, Volume II, published in London in 1848 after drawings by Scottish artist David Roberts and translated into print by lithographer Louis Haghe for publisher F. G. Moon. Roberts had traveled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838–1839, sketching ancient monuments at a moment when British audiences were fascinated by the Nile and its antiquities. The sheet, now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, shows the ruins then identified as the Temple of Kardeseh — also spelled Kardassy — in Nubia. It combines topographical observation with the picturesque taste of the period; its precise modern identification is not stated in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual detail: although this is catalogued as a color lithograph, the color is almost entirely withheld — only a warm tinted ground and the faintest cool greys do the work, so light itself seems to be the pigment.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when an ancient ruin is shown almost alone, with more sky than building?¿Qué cambia cuando una ruina antigua se muestra casi sola, con más cielo que edificio?
  2. Do the small figures help us measure the temple, or do they also suggest who had access to such places in the nineteenth century?¿Las figuras pequeñas sirven solo para medir el templo, o también sugieren quiénes podían llegar a esos lugares en el siglo XIX?
  3. How does the near-absence of color affect our ideas of heat, age, and distance?¿Cómo afecta la casi ausencia de color a nuestra idea del calor, la antigüedad y la distancia?

From my table I first notice the bone-toned paper and the centered lithograph with the caption TEMPLE OF WADY KARDASSY, NUBIA at the bottom. I focus on how the inking leaves an almost empty pale beige sky and how dark shading defines the stony ground and the two fallen rectangular blocks in the foreground. The columns with carved capitals show wear under warm light, and the three small dark figures on the steps help me gauge deterioration. It is a delicate 1848 record.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am drawn to the luminous emptiness filling most of the plate. That pale beige diffuse sky, with no clouds or stars, makes the ruin just right of center look like an abandoned observatory on its rocky rise. The warm even light creates no harsh shadows, only modeling shafts and capitals. Below, the river returns a soft glow near the tiny sailboat and the hazy low mountains. The three tiny human figures remind us how small we are beneath such a vast and silent vault.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This ruin looks like a broken castle for giants. It sits on top of a little rocky hill and has tall columns with stone hats, one even with a face. On the ground there are two huge fallen blocks like giant lego pieces and lots of small rocks. Three tiny people in dark clothes stand on the steps and look very small beside the columns. Down below there is a wide river with a teeny sailboat and mountains far away. Everything looks dry, very quiet, and lit like late afternoon.

  1. #1

In the foreground on the right, how many large rectangular fallen blocks lie on the stony ground?

    HintPista

Look at the lower right of the lithograph, just in front of the ruin on the shaded ground.

  2. #2

What pale color is the wide sky that fills almost the entire upper part of the image?

    HintPista

It is a light warm tone, similar to bone, that leaves the sky almost empty.

  3. #3

At the bottom of the plate near the columns, how many small dark-clothed human figures give scale to the temple?

    HintPista

Find them on the steps and at the foot of the ruin, they look very tiny compared to the columns.
