What you would seeLo que verías

The print appears centered on a wide sheet of off-white paper with generous margins. Inside, a rectangular image with warm beige tones shows a desert landscape dominated on the right by the Great Sphinx in strict profile, facing right. Only its enormous head and neck rise from the sand; the striated nemes headdress, the ear, the eye socket, the blunt nose profile and the eroded layers of the neck are drawn with fine gray hatching. To the left, in the distance, a pyramid rises pale and almost luminous against a cloudy sky. Between the two monuments, tiny groups of travelers in long robes gather near camels; one camel lies in the left foreground beside its handler, while two standing figures advance toward the center. The sand is suggested by soft shadows, bare patches and long diagonal strokes that lead the eye toward the Sphinx. The light is diffused, with no harsh contrasts, and the texture feels like grainy stone and paper. Below the image, small printed text and the caption “SIDE VIEW OF THE GREAT SPHINX” anchor the scene as a plate from a travel book.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the enormous head in profile and measure it against the tiny people and the camel. Then shift your gaze left, toward the pyramid, and notice how both monuments share the same pale light. The small caravan in between changes the reading: it is not only archaeology, but also a nineteenth-century journey measured in human scale.

ContextContexto

This color lithograph, published in London in 1846, belongs to *Egypt and Nubia, Volume I*, after drawings by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe (1806–1885) and published by F. G. Moon. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the Bequest of John Bonebrake. Roberts’s views of Egypt circulated widely in Britain and helped shape the European visual imagination of the ancient world. At the time, the Great Sphinx of Giza was still largely buried in sand, which explains why the image shows mainly its head and neck. It is not known, from the source data alone, which exact printing state this impression represents.

Curious detailDato curioso

In this 1846 view the Sphinx appears to emerge directly from the sand with almost no visible body: it was not fully excavated until the 20th century.

I linger on the bone-colored paper with its generous margins and how the central image breathes. It is a color lithograph in warm beige tones, with fine gray shading that models the striped nemes headdress and the eroded layers of the Sphinx’s neck. The diffuse light creates soft shadows on the sand and the cloudy sky, without harsh contrast. Below, the title in English SIDE VIEW OF THE GREAT SPHINX reminds us this is a travel book plate, made to be preserved and viewed slowly.

What draws me is the relationship between sky and earth under even light. On the left in the distance, the pyramid appears pale and luminous against soft clouds, while on the right the Great Sphinx dominates in strict profile facing right, with only head and neck above the sand. It reminds me that in 1846 it was still half buried. The long diagonal strokes guide us across the desert and the tiny travelers give us scale, just as when I measure distances on the horizon.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is a giant head peeking out of the sand! The Sphinx looks to the side and you can see its striped little hat, its small ear and its nose with no pointy tip. Only the neck sticks out and it looks like it is playing hide and seek. In the back there is a light-colored pyramid and up front there are camels, one lying down resting and others with people in long robes. I like to imagine walking on that soft sand following the little lines that lead me to the huge Sphinx.
