What you would seeLo que verías

This horizontal color lithograph has wide margins of cream paper, with its English title printed below the image. Seen from a sandy rise, the view runs diagonally toward a monumental Egyptian temple occupying the center and right. The foreground is a slope of ochre and brown sand, marked by shallow ruts, stones, and soft shadows; a pale, winding path descends toward the entrance. Tiny against the architecture, several men in turbans and dark robes carry staffs or spears as they walk, two of them crouching at the left of the group. To the right are mounds, low half-buried walls, and remains of mud-brick dwellings. The temple itself is rendered in very pale, almost white stone. On the right rise two great trapezoidal pylons covered with large relief figures drawn in fine, faint lines; between them are the gateway and a columned portico. Stretching left are columned halls with broad capitals, perimeter walls, and flat roofs at several levels. Beyond lies a dark greenish plain, then a pale mountain range under a vast pinkish-gray sky streaked with nearly transparent horizontal clouds. The washlike texture is soft throughout, with no harsh contrasts.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tiny figures in the foreground, then lift your eyes to the pylon: that jump in scale is the point of the image. Next, follow the temple from right to left and notice how finely the relief figures are merely outlined. Finally, look at the low dwellings half-buried on the right, which show the site as an inhabited, partly buried place rather than an isolated monument.

ContextContexto

This color lithograph, dated 1847, comes from Egypt and Nubia, Volume I, after Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe (1806–1885) and associated with London publisher F. G. Moon (1797–1871), according to the source data. Roberts traveled through Egypt in 1838–1839 and his drawings were widely published as tinted lithographs in Britain. The subject is the Temple of Edfu, in Upper Egypt — Apollinopolis in the print's title — dedicated to Horus and built in the Ptolemaic period. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a bequest of John Bonebrake.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual fact: the immense carved figures on the pylon are not fully modeled, but left as delicate outlines, so in the sunlight the gateway looks like a giant sheet of paper covered in drawings.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at how this 1847 color lithograph preserves its cream paper margins and the printed English title at the bottom. I notice the soft wash texture and the light on the very pale stone of the Temple of Edfu, which occupies the center and right side. I am drawn to the grooves of the ochre and brown sandy slope, the pale winding path, and the pylons with fine reliefs, where the printing work and color care are most visible.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From this sandy elevation I look at the temple as if it were a landscape observatory. The broad pinkish and grayish sky with faint horizontal clouds makes me think of the desert light that David Roberts saw in 1838 to 1839. The trapezoidal pylons and columns with wide capitals stand out against the greenish plain and the pale mountains in the distance. I imagine how light shifts on the pale stone throughout the day and what soft shadows it casts on the sand.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The temple looks giant and the people look tiny with their spears! I like the pale little path that goes down through the ochre sand to the door between the two huge pylons. On the right there are little mounds and adobe houses that look hidden. If I were there I would run down the slope making grooves with my feet and look at the big sky with thin little clouds. Can you imagine going through that super tall door?
