What you would seeLo que verías

A black-ink engraving on cream paper presents a crowded palace interior built with strong perspective. At right, under a canopied throne with heavy curtains and a row of tassels, a bearded judge sits in profile wearing flowing robes and a crown from which two tall, pointed ears rise. He stretches his right hand toward the center, while draped women stand close on either side of him, one leaning in to whisper and the other looking down with folded hands. At center, a woman in a short, ornamented dress and sandals holds a tall flaming torch and drags a nearly naked, gaunt young man by the hair. A thin, bare-chested older figure assists her, grinning, while a small child at lower left is pulled along by the woman's dress. Behind them gathers another group of women; one raises a large oval net. The tiled floor, columns, arches and steps lead back to an upper-left opening where two figures descend on a bright cloud. In a central niche stands a nude male statue holding an object. Fine cross-hatching models muscles, folds, stone and shadow. Along the bottom, an ornate cartouche bears Latin verses, flanked by two small inscribed plaques.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the judge's outstretched hand and his pointed ears: the whole judgment hinges on that listening. Then follow the diagonal toward the raised torch and the young man being dragged, and notice how he turns away from the court. Finally, look to the small luminous cloud at the upper left, where rescue arrives late and from afar.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this 1560 Italian engraving as *The Calumny of Apelles*, by Giorgio Ghisi (1520–1582) after a design by Luca Penni (1500/04–1557), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The scene restages a lost painting by the ancient Greek painter Apelles, known only through a written description preserved from antiquity. In that allegory of injustice, a judge with large ears listens to Calumny, aided by Envy, as she drags an innocent youth by the hair. Suspicion and blindfolded Ignorance flank the throne, Deceit waits with a net, Repentance looks toward Truth, and Truth and Time descend to expose the lie.

Curious detailDato curioso

Apelles' original painting does not survive: Renaissance artists, including Botticelli in a famous earlier version, reconstructed the scene solely from an ancient written description.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Who in this scene could still stop the unjust judgment, and why do they not act sooner?¿Quién en esta escena podría todavía detener el juicio injusto y por qué no actúa antes?
  2. How does knowing each figure is an allegory change the way you read their expressions and gestures?¿Cómo cambia la lectura de las expresiones y los gestos saber que cada personaje es una alegoría?
  3. What present-day rumors or trials does this crowded, theatrical court bring to mind?¿Qué rumores o juicios de hoy te recuerda este tribunal tan concurrido y teatral?

I focus on Ghisi’s engraving work on the cream paper. Every super fine line builds muscles, drapery folds and shadows over columns and tiles with a patience I admire. I see light staining and the contrast between black ink and the warm background. Wear is minimal for a print from 1560. I wonder how the plate was inked to achieve those deep blacks and how the cartouche with verses in Latin has been preserved without fading.

What draws me most is that bright opening at the upper left. Two figures descend from a shining cloud and break the palace gloom. To me they feel like an eclipse ending, light finally coming in. The rest is shadow and deceit, with the judge with pointed ears, the woman with the torch and the large oval net. The perspective of arches and tiles leads everything toward that final brightness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This palace looks like a maze with lots of people pushing each other. There is a man with long pointy ears like a donkey sitting on a throne with curtains and tassels. In the middle a woman pulls really hard on the hair of a young man with almost no clothes and another man helps her, and below a tiny child holds onto her skirt. Behind them a woman carries a giant net. Up on a cloud two people are coming with light to save the day.
