What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical etching in black ink on cream-colored paper, enclosed by a thin rectangular border. A ruined stone building fills almost the entire scene. In the upper half, a great broken arch stretches diagonally from the left edge toward a wall on the right, covered with vegetation that spills over its stones. Behind it rises a cylindrical tower with a damaged top, while the cloudy sky is suggested by curved, parallel lines and a small flock of birds. Lower down, a second rounded arch opens a passage in deep shadow, through which pale columns and fragments of wall can be glimpsed. On the right, tall, narrow windows pierce a wall streaked with vines and cracks; at the bottom, a partly fallen railing or balcony adds another layer of decay. The foreground is dense with bushes and grasses made from quick, dark, tangled hatching. On a lit mound to the left stands a small white goat; near the shadowed path below, two more appear, one black and one white. The line varies from fine in the sky to thick and energetic in the foliage. Small brownish spots mark the aged paper. At upper right is the number “33”; below, the title and the artist's name can be read.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the great broken arch from side to side, then look for the tower rising behind it. Only afterward notice the three goats: their small bodies change the scale and turn the monument into a place where life goes on. Compare the dense shadow of the foliage with the clear openings of sky and doorway.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is Plate 33, *Conway Castle, N. Wales*, by British artist John Sell Cotman (1782–1842), dated 1838 and made in 19th-century England. It is a softground etching from a bound volume containing 48 plates. It belongs to the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the Bequest of John Bonebrake. The image shows the ruined castle named in the title, in north Wales, overtaken by vegetation. Its taste for ruins, untamed nature, and traces of the past fits within a sensibility widely cultivated in British art of the period. The source gives no description or exact viewpoint, so it is not known how faithful this view is to a specific spot within the building.

Curious detailDato curioso

In softground etching, the artist draws on paper laid over a soft ground on the plate; when the paper is lifted, it pulls the ground away in a grainy line that, once bitten and printed, can resemble a pencil or chalk drawing.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the cream paper with its brownish age spots and the thin border that frames the scene. The black ink shifts from fine lines in the sky to thick, tangled strokes in the bushes in the foreground. Since it is an 1838 soft-ground etching, I am interested in how the line keeps the energy of the original drawing. I see the vegetation invading the stone and think about preserving that contrast without erasing the marks of time.

I look up and search for the sky suggested with curved parallel lines for the clouds and a small flock of birds. Behind the large broken arch that cuts diagonally across, the cylindrical tower rises with its damaged top, like an abandoned observatory. I like to imagine what part of the sky would be seen from those tall narrow windows, now surrounded by vines and cracks. The ruin feels like a lookout toward time, more than toward the stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This castle is all broken and covered with plants that look messy haired. I like the three little goats, one white one up on a sunny mound and two more down below in the shade, one black and one white. I feel they are playing hide and seek among bushes made of dark little scribbles. The big dark arch looks like a mysterious cave and the narrow windows make me think giants used to live there and then left.
