What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground on the right, a woman in profile occupies more than half the height of the image. She wears a very large yellow straw hat with a dark green interior, lifted at the back, a loose black shawl over her shoulders, a white collar at her neck, and a long olive-green skirt that falls almost to her wooden shoes. With both hands she holds a wide, empty woven basket at waist height. Fine vertical hatching shapes the folds of her clothing and gives the print a drawn, grainy texture. On the left, three women in dark brown shawls, long skirts, and white caps stand in a small group on pale sand; one carries a wooden bucket, another looks directly toward the viewer. The ground is suggested with swift ochre and gray lines suggesting wet sand and long shadows. In the background, numerous sailboats with dark hulls and black or gray sails crowd the shoreline beneath a cloudy sky rendered in swirling gray, blue, and faint pink strokes. Two tiny silhouetted figures walk near the water. At lower left appears the signature “L. Borgex 98.” The palette is muted, dominated by browns, blacks, ochres, and dusty greens under soft, diffuse light.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the woman on the right and follow her profile toward the group on the left, as if you were waiting with her on the sand. Then look at the empty baskets and the boats behind them: the catch has not yet arrived, or has already been carried away. Notice how her oversized yellow hat and sunlit skirt set her apart from the white caps and dark shawls of her companions.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, Les Sardinières is a color lithograph made in Paris in 1898 by Louis Bourgeois Borgex (1873–1959) and printed by Imprimerie Champenois. It is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the bequest of John Bonebrake, and the source lists it under Prints as part of a bound volume. The French title refers to women linked to the sardine trade, a world in which female labor was essential for hauling, sorting, and preparing the fish. The exact port shown is not recorded, so it is not known whether it depicts a specific place or a composite coastal scene.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that no sardines are visible anywhere: neither in the baskets, nor on the sand, nor on the boats. The whole scene is built around the waiting and carrying that surround the fish, rather than the fish itself.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Are these women arriving to receive the sardines, waiting for the boats, or leaving after work, and what visual clues support each reading?¿Estas mujeres llegan a recibir las sardinas, esperan a los barcos o ya terminaron su jornada, y qué pistas visuales apoyan cada lectura?
  2. How does the scene change if we focus on women’s labor rather than on the picturesque coastal landscape?¿Cómo cambia la escena si la miramos desde el trabajo de las mujeres y no como un paisaje costero pintoresco?
  3. Why might the artist have placed one woman so large and alone in the foreground, separated from the group behind her?¿Por qué el artista habrá colocado a una mujer tan grande y sola en primer plano, separada del grupo que tiene detrás?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this 1898 color lithograph was made, printed by Imprimerie Champenois. Look at the fine vertical hatching that shapes the black shawl and olive green skirt of the woman in the yellow hat, that grainy texture typical of the lithographic stone. The colors are all very powdery, ochres, browns and grays that seem muted on purpose to create the diffuse light of a cloudy beach. Down on the left you can still read the clear signature L. Borgex 98.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Even though there are no stars here, I am drawn to the sky in the background, full of gray and blue swirls with a hint of pink under soft, diffuse light. It is the typical overcast coastal sky that erases harsh shadows and makes everything even, as you can see on the pale sand with ochre strokes. In the distance, the sailboats with dark sails crowd the horizon, making the figures look tiny. The waiting of the sardine women with baskets and buckets reminds me of someone watching the horizon waiting for a change.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The lady with the giant yellow hat is my favorite, it looks like a sun on her head and inside it is green. She wears wooden clogs like from a storybook and hugs a big empty basket at her belly. Behind her there are three women with white caps, one with a bucket and another looking at us. On the shore there are lots of little boats with black sails and two tiny people walking. Everything looks brown and sad but calm, as if they are waiting for something.
