What you would seeLo que verías
In the center of a horizontal composition sits a low, wide bowl, photographed from the front and slightly from above against a seamless background that shifts from dark gray at the top to light gray below. The vessel has an oblong, slightly irregular mouth, wider than it is tall, with a thick, rounded rim and a narrow ring foot. Its upper and middle sections are covered in a glossy glaze of very dark brown, almost black, with amber and olive reflections where the light catches the surface. Around the body runs a raised horizontal band decorated with a cream-white geometric pattern: connected rectangles and small circles, as if forming a chain or lattice. That white area is matte, granular, and uneven, contrasting sharply with the shine around it. Toward the bottom, the glaze thins and disappears, revealing rough, sandy, grayish-brown ceramic with small chips, pores, and wear marks. The interior is visible only as a dark strip beneath the rim. The studio light comes from the upper left, creating bright highlights on the rim and a soft shadow beneath the base. Everything conveys a heavy, tactile, handmade object, small in scale and deliberately imperfect.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, notice that the bowl is not perfectly round: follow its oval rim and the slight unevenness of the edge. Then look at the white pattern on the side and how its rough texture interrupts the dark, shiny glaze. Finally, move down to the unglazed base, where the piece changes from polished to earthy.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a clog-shaped teabowl made in Japan in the early 1600s, during the late Momoyama period (1573–1615), by an unknown maker. It is glazed stoneware of the Mino ware, Oribe type, and is now in the Japanese Art collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source explains that tea gatherings are fundamental to Japanese culture and that teabowls are among the most important objects in tea practice. Its oblong shape and bold abstract designs are characteristic of Oribe, a style named for the tea master who promoted this aesthetic. The specific workshop and place of use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the white decoration is not a smooth painted line, but a rough, almost sandy band that seems to sit on top of the dark glaze, so the pattern can be sensed as much by touch as by sight.

- How does the deliberate irregularity of this bowl change the experience of holding and drinking from it?¿Cómo cambia la experiencia de sostener y beber de este tazón su irregularidad deliberada?
- What might the contrast between the dark glaze, the white pattern, and the bare clay communicate to someone using it in a tea gathering?¿Qué podría comunicar el contraste entre el vidriado oscuro, el motivo blanco y la arcilla desnuda a quien lo usaba en una reunión de té?
- Why might an object meant for a refined ritual value roughness and asymmetry instead of perfection?¿Por qué un objeto destinado a un ritual refinado podría valorar la aspereza y la asimetría en lugar de la perfección?

I pause on how two skins coexist in one piece: on top the almost black brown glaze, glossy, with amber and olive sparkles where the light hits, and in the middle that creamy white band, matte and grainy, with rectangles and little circles in relief that look like a small chain. Below the clay stays bare, sandy, grayish brown, with pores and nicks from time and use. That intentional imperfection moves me, that balance between control and chance typical of the Oribe style from the Momoyama period.

I see this bowl as a small nocturnal horizon. The background shifts from dark gray to light, like a sky at dawn, and the bowl floats in the center like a low, wide planet. Its dark glaze shines like a surface wet with night, with amber reflections that feel like grazing stars. The white band with its geometric lattice reminds me of a constellation or a hand-drawn orbit. Below, the rough and opaque part is solid ground. It is a portable cosmos for the tea ceremony.

It looks like a little shoe or a tiny canoe for small giants, but it is a bowl for drinking tea. I like it because it is not perfect, it is chubby and its little mouth is wobbly and stretched. On top it shines like melted dark chocolate and in the middle it has a white belt with little squares and dots that looks stamped on. Underneath it looks scratchy like a cookie and I feel that if I touch it it would tickle my hand. I imagine it is heavy and keeps warmth inside.
