Ink and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

A single vertical page of aged, ochre-toned paper is shown against a pale gray background, its left edge joined to another page that is only partly visible. The binding can be seen at three small, whitish stitching points along the fold, beside a narrow dark shadow. The paper is not smooth: fibers, faint stains, uneven edges, and slightly worn corners are visible, especially at the bottom. At the center, a rectangle of text is enclosed by fine rules in red, blue, and gold set very close together. Inside are thirteen lines of black Persian calligraphy, cursive, slanted, and interlinked, with small dots and diacritical marks. The ink varies in strength, and some words end in long tails extending toward the margin. At the top of the frame are three small horizontal compartments, almost empty, divided by gold lines. There are no illustrations or human figures; all attention falls on the rhythm of the handwriting. Outside the frame, at lower left, is a short handwritten note in black, set at an angle. The light is even and soft, without strong reflections, revealing the matte texture of the paper and the precision of each stroke.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the block of script as an image, following its rhythm before trying to read it. Then notice the fine frame in red, blue, and gold that separates the text from the wide, quiet margin. The small note below, outside the frame, changes the reading: this was a working book, handled and annotated.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this text page comes from the Mir’at al-quds, or Mirror of Holiness, by Father Jerome Xavier, made in 1602 in Mughal India, at Allahabad, for Prince Salim (1569–1627). It is a manuscript in ink and gold on paper, now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Jerome Xavier was a Jesuit missionary present at the Mughal court, and the work recounts the life of Jesus in Persian, the court’s language of high culture. It probably belonged to a larger book, perhaps illustrated on other pages, but this leaf preserves text alone; the calligrapher is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A life of Jesus written in Persian for a Muslim Mughal prince takes the visual form of an Islamic manuscript, with ruled frames and flowing Persian calligraphy.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look closely at this ochre paper and you will see it is not smooth, it has fibers, light stains and uneven edges with worn corners from age. At the center there are thirteen lines of Persian calligraphy in black ink, very elegant, with long tails and tiny precise dots. Everything is framed by very fine lines in red, blue and gold placed close together. On the left you can spot three small white stitch points and a narrow shadow from the fold. It is a page made in 1602 that still feels serene.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this page looks like an orderly sky. The central rectangle is like a constellation of thirteen aligned lines, each curved stroke like an orbit linking to the next. The red, blue and gold lines framing it remind me of the bands we use to map the heavens. At the top there are three small empty compartments, like three little windows for observing. There are no figures, only rhythm, as if the black ink wanted to tell a patient story, written in Allahabad for Prince Salim.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sheet looks like it comes from a very old cookie-colored book. In the middle it has thirteen lines that look like waves or swings going up and down, all written with a black pen. Around it there are little stripes in red, blue and gold like a pretty frame. On the left you can see three white dots where it is stitched to another page. At the top there are three empty little boxes and below a small slanted note. There are no drawings of people, just dancing letters, and I like to follow them with my finger.
