Ink and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

A single aged manuscript page is seen, slightly tilted, photographed against a flat grey-brown ground. The paper is creamy beige, uneven and lightly stained, with darker edges, small spots and a wavy stain near the upper edge. At the left, the gutter of the bound volume is visible, along with the edge of the preceding leaf and small holes and tears from the binding. At the centre is a vertical rectangular text block framed by fine rules in blue, orange and gold. Inside, about fourteen lines of black Persian script flow from right to left in a cursive, elegant hand, with long horizontals, compressed curves and diacritical dots. A small header panel at the top, subdivided into rectangles, contains shorter writing. The ink varies from deep black to brownish grey, suggesting the pressure and movement of the reed pen. The margins are wide, especially at right and below, giving the writing air and prominence. Outside the frame, at the lower left, a few words are written diagonally in smaller script. There are no figures or illustrations; the visual force comes from contrast between dark calligraphy, pale paper and the luminous frame. The surface looks matte, fibrous and fragile.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the block of script as an image, not only as text: notice its rhythm and density. Then follow the coloured ruling that contains it and look for the small diagonal writing at the lower left, outside the frame. That marginal note changes the page from a surface for reading into evidence of the work of the bookmaker.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: at the lower left, outside the main frame and written diagonally, there is a small group of words. In manuscripts of this type, such a note often served as a catchword, helping the binder place the pages in the correct order.

I focus on the creamy beige paper, with stains, darkened edges and visible fibers. It is a matte, fragile paper that has survived since 1602. I look at the text rectangle framed by blue, orange and golden lines that protect the writing. Fourteen lines of Persian calligraphy in black ink, with diacritical dots and elegant strokes, breathe inside wide margins. At the bottom left there is a small diagonal note and on the left you can see the sewing holes.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this page as an orderly sky. The blue, orange and golden frame is like a constellation delimiting the universe of the text. The fourteen lines of Persian calligraphy move like aligned stars from right to left, with long strokes and precise curves. The wide margins are the emptiness that lets the whole breathe. The small header at the top works like a luminous title. Everything conveys serenity, like looking at an ancient map of the heavens.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old cookie-colored sheet that someone took great care of. In the center there is a rectangle with many little black lines that are letters going backwards, from right to left. It has a pretty blue border with orange and gold, like a shiny frame. At the top there is a tiny little box with more letters. At the bottom left there is a slanted little writing, like a secret. I like that it has no pictures, just dancing letters.
