What you would seeLo que verías
A single long, narrow leaf occupies almost the entire width of the image, placed horizontally and centered against a smooth, pale, almost bone-white background. Its shape is an elongated rectangle with slightly uneven ends: the left edge looks bluntly cut, the right edge is darker and a little frayed. The surface is tan, beige, and aged honey-colored, with darker brown streaks, small stains, a vertical crack toward the right, and fine longitudinal fibers that reveal its plant material. Across most of the leaf run five or six dense, continuous lines of dark script, made of rounded, looping, rhythmic curves that rarely break. The writing fills the surface yet leaves narrow margins. Two round holes pierce the leaf, left-of-center and right-of-center, each ringed by an irregular circle of reddish pigment. Short red underlinings and marks also appear among the lines, especially toward the right and at the far left, where a small isolated sign stands out. The light is even and soft, like museum photography, with minimal shadow and no people, hands, or other objects to indicate scale; its very stretched proportion and the regular rows of writing dominate.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow one line of script from end to end and notice how it flows without lifting the hand. Then look for the two holes and the red marks: they change the leaf from a simple surface into an ordered, bound object. Finally, look closely at the edges and stains to see the plant material beneath the writing.
ContextContexto
This is a leaf from a Buddhist manuscript produced in Sri Lanka by Sinhalese makers. The source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, dates it to c. 1700 and to the late 17th century, with an unknown author. It lists the material as fiber paper, while the description explains the traditional Sri Lankan use of palm leaf. According to that description, the leaves were boiled, dried in the sun, and rubbed with oils; a scribe incised the text with a metal stylus and then charcoal powder was wiped across the surface so it settled only into the incised lines. The specific Buddhist text it contains is not identified in the available information.

The writing was not first applied as ink on the surface: the scribe incised the signs into the leaf with a stylus, and charcoal powder was then rubbed over it so that darkness remained only inside the grooves.

This elongated leaf makes me think of patient hands. I see its honey and ochre tones, the lengthwise fibers, the vertical fissure on the right and the frayed edges that speak of its age. It was boiled, sun-dried and rubbed with oils to make it flexible, then the scribe incised each curve with a metal stylus and set charcoal dust into the grooves. I pause on the two binding holes with their reddish circles and the subtle red underlinings that protect the text.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer, I am drawn to the order of this horizontal leaf. It is like a strip of written sky: five or six continuous lines of curving signs advancing with steady rhythm on a honey-colored ground. The two holes with reddish rings are like small eclipses interrupting the constellation of glyphs. It comes from Sri Lanka, from around 1700, and although we do not know which Buddhist text it copies, its regularity conveys the same calm as watching stars aligned night after night.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant, old honey-colored ruler with brownish streaks. It has lots of little letters with round tails going in super long rows, like waves. There are two little holes with a red circle around them, like two painted eyes, and also tiny red dashes among the letters. One end looks a bit broken and frayed. I like to count the rows and follow the curves with my finger without touching, because it looks very delicate and special.
