What you would seeLo que verías
The leaf fills almost the entire width of the image, seen from the front against a plain grayish background that emphasizes its elongated, fragile shape. It is a narrow palm-leaf folio in a toasted beige tone, with irregular edges, rounded corners, and small dark stains that reveal its age. The lower edge curves slightly, and the surface shows fine grain, roughness, and more worn areas near the ends. Across it are three dense blocks of handwritten text in black ink. Each block contains several closely spaced lines of small, regular characters with strong upper horizontal strokes. Between the blocks are two circular perforations with white interiors, aligned horizontally: one between the first and second block, and another between the second and third. On the left margin there are brief turned annotations and a few small signs; tiny marks in red and black also appear over certain characters. The light is even and soft, without dramatic shadows, allowing the fibrous texture of the support and the precision of the strokes to be seen. Although there are no figures or landscapes, the repeated rhythm of the writing, the emptiness around the holes, and the worn edges create a sense of order, patience, and prolonged use.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First, look at the leaf as an object, not only as a page: follow its worn edges and slight curve. Then notice the two holes and how the three blocks of text organize themselves around those empty spaces. A detail that changes the reading is the small turned writing on the left margin, a reminder that this was a handled, used book.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is folio 160, verso, of a manuscript of the *Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra*, the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, an important Mahayana Buddhist text. It is dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat in the month of Ashvina. The record associates the work with Vikramashila Monastery in Bihar, eastern India, a major center of Buddhist learning, and notes “Painting: Nepal, Kathmandu,” a statement that probably refers to other folios in the same manuscript; this side shows only text. The author is unknown and the technique is gum tempera and ink on palm leaf. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The two holes in the leaf were not damage: in palm-leaf manuscripts they were used to pass through a cord that held the loose folios together as a book.

From my bench I look at this toasted palm leaf with irregular edges and age spots. The fibrous texture, fine veins and wear near the ends speak of centuries of use. Black ink forms dense blocks of small characters with marked upper strokes, interrupted by two circular binding holes. I pause at the precision of the line and the small turned marginal notes that reveal sustained human care and a patient order that has survived for almost nine hundred years.

I am fascinated that this leaf has an exact date, Sunday September 14 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat in the month of Ashvina. It is the verso of folio 160 of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, copied in gum tempera and ink on palm leaf. Linked to Vikramashila monastery in Bihar, it makes me think of monks measuring time with moons and seasons to preserve wisdom, just as today we track the passage of stars with different media.

It looks like a long cookie-colored ruler with two little white holes like eyes. It is full of tiny very straight black lines crowded together, like ants marching in a row. Its corners are soft and worn, as if many hands had touched it gently. It has no pictures, only letters and two little holes in the middle. I imagine if you blow on it softly it could fly like a dry leaf but with secrets written on top.
