The image shows an open book photographed from above against a neutral gray background. In the foreground is folio 58 verso, a vellum leaf in warm, yellowed ivory with irregular, slightly darkened edges and signs of age, especially along the lower edge and near the spine. The parchment texture is matte and softly wrinkled, dotted with small brown stains and a tiny hole near the right margin. The text block sits toward the center-right of the page, written in Greek in reddish-brown ink in a dense, even Byzantine minuscule hand, arranged in about twenty continuous lines. At the start of one paragraph a slightly enlarged initial letter stands out. The left margin is wide and mostly blank, with a translucent conservation strip adhered along the inner edge by the gutter. The dark leather binding is just visible on the far left. Light is soft and even, with no harsh shadows, revealing the fiber of the vellum and the steady stroke of the ink. The scale suggests a medium-sized codex made for monastic use.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the compact block of script, then the wide empty margin that frames it. Linger on the reddish ink, the regularity of the hand and the enlarged initial that marks a new passage. Notice the traces of time on the vellum — stains, wrinkles and the small hole — which remind us this is an object handled and preserved for almost a thousand years.

ContextContexto

This is folio 58 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries from Byzantium, Constantinople, dated about 1000–1100, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. The full volume comprises 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. While this page shows text alone, each of the four gospels in the book opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting its author together with birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains representing the fountain of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The maker is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this folio is plain, the same codex contains opening pages richly illuminated with gold, peacocks and fountains, Byzantine motifs that link the sacred text to the idea of eternal life.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time has left on this yellowish ivory vellum. I see damp stains on the lower margin, the irregular edge, the matte and wrinkled parchment dotted with little specks and even a small hole near the right border. The reddish brown ink still holds firm in those twenty dense lines of tiny Byzantine Greek. It comforts me to see the translucent conservation strip by the spine and the dark leather still holding the book together. It is a medium monastic codex that has endured for a thousand years.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Like someone watching the sky patiently, I look at this folio 58 verso and think of constellations of text. The block of Greek writing sits center right like an orderly firmament in twenty lines, with an enlarged initial marking a new beginning like a guide star. Even though this page shows only ink on vellum, I know the full volume of 428 leaves holds each Gospel with illuminations of peacocks and fountains of life. A monastic universe from Constantinople between 1000 and 1100.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and tired! Its leaf is tortilla colored with little brown stains and wobbly edges, as if it got wet. It has many tiny brown letters in Greek, all close together in about twenty little rows, and one bigger letter at the start as if shouting here something begins. On one side you can see its dark leather cover and a clear little tape that protects it. I imagine a monk writing nonstop in a monastery many many years ago.
