A single open page of a thick book is shown, photographed head-on against a dark gray background. It is folio 84, recto, handwritten in Greek on vellum in a yellowish cream tone, with uneven edges, faint moisture stains, and small marks left by time. At left, the center stitching and the start of the binding are just visible; at right, the fore-edge reveals the thickness of many stacked leaves, slightly darkened with age. The text occupies the upper and central part of the page, leaving wide blank margins, especially at the bottom. At the top, eight lines in reddish ink, in larger and more widely spaced letters, form a distinct highlighted block. Below it, after a short gap, begins a much denser block: about twenty-five lines in dark brown ink, in small, tight, regular handwriting full of abbreviations and accents. At the start of this second block, a large initial in the shape of Pi stands out, extending into the left margin. In the upper right corner, written in pencil in a faint modern hand, is «84». The light is even and soft, with no strong glare, revealing the matte, slightly rough texture of the prepared skin and the varying sharpness of the absorbed ink.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the wide empty margins and notice how much silence surrounds the writing. Then compare the red upper block with the dense brown block below, and look for the large initial that marks the new beginning. Finally, find the penciled «84» in the corner: that small modern mark changes the page from sacred object to catalogued museum piece.

ContextContexto

This is folio 84 (recto) of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Although this page is mostly text, the museum notes that each of the four Gospels in the book opens with brightly illuminated borders featuring its author, birds — mainly peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The author is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

On this page, the most eye-catching contrast is not gold or miniature painting, but color in the writing itself: the larger red-ink lines stand out from the main commentary, a medieval hierarchy system that guided the reader before bold type or titles existed.

  1. What changes in our reading when a sacred text is also an object of study, with commentaries surrounding the main text?¿Qué cambia en la lectura cuando un texto sagrado también es objeto de estudio, con comentarios que rodean el texto principal?
  2. Why leave so much blank margin on such a costly material as vellum?¿Por qué dejar tanto margen vacío en un material tan costoso como la vitela?
  3. What might the red-ink lines have meant to a medieval reader encountering this page in silence?¿Qué podrían haber significado las líneas en tinta roja para quien leía esta página en silencio en la Edad Media?

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look at this page with a caretaker’s eyes. It’s vellum, prepared skin, and you can tell by its creamy yellowish tone, the uneven edges, and those faint damp stains left by time. At the top there are eight lines in reddish ink, larger and more spaced out. Below, about twenty-five very tight lines in dark brown, with that large Pi-shaped initial jutting into the margin. I linger on the stitching on the left and the thick fore-edge on the right: 428 leaves that have survived a thousand years.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky-watching hobbyist, what draws me is the order. At the top, eight lines in red like guide stars, more spaced out, marking the beginning. Below, a dense block of about twenty-five lines in brown, regular as rows in a constellation written in Greek. The large Pi at the start is like a brighter star showing where to begin. And at the top right, that penciled 84 is our modern coordinate so we don’t get lost in this universe of 428 pages from Byzantium.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks very old, creamy colored with little spots. At the top there are just a few lines in a reddish color and below there are so many tiny brown lines, all very close together. At the start of the brown part there is a big letter that looks like a little table with two legs, sticking out from the line. On the side you can see a lot of pages stacked together — it’s a super chubby book! And at the top it says 84 in pencil, like when I mark my homework. I like to imagine who wrote it so long ago.
