Open page of an antique manuscript book, seen from a slightly oblique top-down view, showing folio 110 recto. The support is vellum in yellowish ivory, with a wavy, subtly wrinkled texture, ochre humidity stains and irregular edges darkened to brown with age. At the center are two blocks of script in reddish-brown ink, in Byzantine Greek minuscule, arranged in tight horizontal lines. The upper block is shorter, about nine lines, and the lower one is denser and continuous; between them, an enlarged initial capital stands in the left margin. The ink varies in intensity and shows tiny corrections. The leather binding is glimpsed at the left spine, with visible stitching and small binding holes. In the upper right corner a modern pencil foliation reads 110. The light is soft and even, with no harsh shadows, revealing folds, creases and the porous grain of the parchment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the whole page to sense the contrast between aged vellum and the regular hand. Then focus on the shift between the two text blocks and the enlarged initial in the margin that structures the reading. Finally notice the traces of time —stains, creases and modern foliation— that tell the material history of the book.

ContextContexto

This folio belongs to a Gospel Book with Commentaries of about 428 leaves with Greek texts, dated circa 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, each of the four gospels in the book opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting the author as well as birds —principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul— and fountains representing the fountain of life. Its level of sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The technique is ink, tempera and gold on vellum, with leather binding. The maker is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this folio shows only text, the complete volume retains pages with richly illuminated borders in gold and tempera, typical of luxury Byzantine manuscripts made for study and liturgy.

I pause on what time has left visible in this yellowish ivory vellum. I see the wavy texture, the wrinkles, the pores and the ochre damp stains on the brown edges. The reddish brown ink of the Byzantine Greek minuscule shows different intensities and small corrections that reveal the human hand. I notice the two text blocks, the enlarged initial in the margin and the pencil numbering 110. It reminds me that this folio is part of a set of 428 leaves made between 1000 and 1100.

When I look at this folio 110 I think about how knowledge was recorded before printing. Here the text in Byzantine Greek minuscule is organized in two compact blocks with reddish brown ink on vellum. I do not see here the illuminated borders with peacocks and fountains described by the Cleveland Museum of Art, but I know that in this 428 leaf book each gospel opens with them as symbols of immortality and salvation. Made in Constantinople between 1000 and 1100, it reminds me that copying was preserving light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks very old and wrinkly like yellowish cream parchment with little brown spots. It has two little groups of tiny letters in another language which is Greek and a bigger letter on the side. At the top right someone wrote 110 in pencil. I imagine someone writing very carefully a very long time ago, between 1000 and 1100, in a place called Constantinople. They tell me that on other pages there are drawings of peacocks that mean the soul does not die and pretty little fountains.

    HintPista

It is a bird with showy feathers that opens its tail like a fan and here represents that the soul does not die.
