What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume is photographed from directly above against a flat, dark gray-green background. On the left, the stacked edges of many earlier leaves are visible, slightly uneven and cream-colored, with the spine barely glimpsed at the lower corner. A translucent vertical strap holds down the shown page, folio 112 verso, so it stays flat. The vellum is warm ivory and aged parchment in tone, with brownish stains, soft wrinkles especially along the left side, small dark specks, and gently darkened, irregular edges. The page is filled almost entirely with handwritten Greek in brown ink. At the top there is a heading in faded reddish and golden tones, partly worn. Below it, a dense upper block of smaller, slanted script fills about half the page. After a narrow gap, a second block begins, written larger and darker, with more widely spaced lines. Small circular ornaments mark points in the outer margins and beside the lower block. No figures, borders, or large illustrations appear here. The light is even and soft, revealing the matte, slightly fibrous texture of the animal skin and the thickness of the gathered pages.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two blocks of text and compare their size and density. Then look at the stains, wrinkles, and worn edges of the vellum. The contrast between the plainness of this page and the illuminated openings described in the source changes how we imagine the volume as a whole.

ContextContexto

Unknown author, dated circa 1000–1100 and associated with Byzantium, Constantinople. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a Gospel Book with commentaries, made with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek. Each Gospel opens with brilliantly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — principally peacocks, symbols of the immortality of the soul — and fountains, representing the fountain of life and the salvation of the soul. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople; that origin is not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this folio looks almost plain, the same volume contains 428 leaves and illuminated Gospel openings with peacocks and fountains in tempera and gold.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it mean to encounter a sacred book through a working page of commentary rather than through its most decorated openings?¿Qué significa acercarse a un libro sagrado desde una página de trabajo y comentario, y no desde sus aperturas más decoradas?
  2. How do the stains, wrinkles, and repairs of use change your sense of the text's age and value?¿Cómo cambian las manchas, arrugas y huellas de uso tu percepción de la edad y el valor del texto?
  3. If you could not read Greek, what would the rhythm, density, and color of the handwriting still communicate to you?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the material of the book, that warm ivory vellum already showing its age. I see brownish stains, soft wrinkles especially on the left and dark speckles that speak of the passage of time. The brown ink forms two blocks of Greek handwriting, one denser on top and another larger and more spaced below, with a faded reddish golden header. I notice how the translucent strip holds the page without harming it and how the edge of stacked leaves reveals the thickness of the volume.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Like someone observing constellations, I see this page as a sky of signs. The Greek handwriting covers almost the whole folio 112 verso in brown ink, arranged in two blocks, the upper one small and slanted and the lower one larger and darker. The small circular ornaments in the margins are like stars marking pauses. There are no large figures or illustrations here, just handwritten text on parchment. It reminds me that monks also measured time, between prayers and copies, under the same even light that now reveals the matte texture.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and very big book that has been open for a long time. It has cream colored leaves like cookies, with uneven edges and little brown spots. It is full of tiny letters in another language that I do not understand and everything is handwritten in brown ink. On top there is something reddish that is almost faded. A clear strip keeps it from closing. I like the little round dots on the sides, they look like secret decorations. It has no pictures, just letters everywhere.
