What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a thick bound volume photographed from above against a dark gray ground, open so that the right-hand page fills most of the frame. On the far left only a narrow strip of the facing page is visible, while at right the layered edges of many leaves reveal the book's considerable thickness. The vellum is aged cream and ivory, unevenly toned, with tan stains, faint foxing, soft wrinkles, and a slightly rippled surface that catches diffuse light. The text, handwritten in Greek in brown ink, occupies the upper two-thirds of the page in two blocks. The upper block is smaller and denser, preceded by a faded pinkish-orange heading near the top. Below it, after a small gap, begins a larger script; its opening initial, a tall dark K, extends into the left margin. Lines are closely set yet irregular, with abbreviations, accents, and lighter or darker strokes. At top right, the number “137” is written in a later-looking hand. Small brown spots appear at the left margin and a grayish mark interrupts the text toward the right. The lower third is mostly blank, creased, and worn, emphasizing age, fragility, and prolonged use.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large initial in the middle of the page and notice how it organizes the reading. Then move up to the faded heading and down across the stains and wrinkles in the lower right corner. That contrast between orderly writing and worn material changes the page from plain text into evidence of centuries of handling.

ContextContexto

This is folio 137 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, likely Constantinople, around 1000–1100, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Written in Greek in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, the volume has 428 leaves. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the soul's immortality, and fountains representing life and salvation. Its sophistication suggests, though it does not prove, that it was produced in a Constantinopolitan monastery. This particular page is mainly text, not one of those illuminated openings.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising observation: after roughly a thousand years, the page's most eloquent marks may not be the letters, but the grease-like stains, soft creases, and darkened edges left by repeated turning and touch.

The conservatorLa restauradora

When I look at this page I focus on the creamy, uneven vellum with ochre stains and soft wrinkles that speak of a thousand years of use. The brown ink of the Greek text varies in intensity and reveals handwritten abbreviations and accents. I pause at the faded pinkish orange heading and that large dark K reaching into the margin. The empty, worn lower third reminds me how fragile the codex is and how much care this folio 137 still needs.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This folio draws me like an old sky map. The Greek text in two blocks looks like tight constellations, with the large K as a guiding star marking a new beginning. At the top right the number 137 is like a coordinate added later. I think of Byzantium around 1000-1100, copying under soft light, just as we observe the sky. The blank space below is like the void that invites us to contemplate what is not written.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and chubby book, with many little pages stacked on the right side. The page is cookie cream colored with little brown spots. At the top there are tiny letters and below there are bigger letters with a giant K sticking out. I like that at the bottom there is nothing written, just the wrinkly sheet. The little number 137 at the top makes me think there are many pages left to read and that someone used it a lot.

  1. #1

What large dark initial letter sticks out toward the left margin of the page?

    HintPista

Look for the start of the larger text block, below the blank space between the two blocks.

  2. #2

What number is read at the top right of the vellum, added by a later hand?

    HintPista

It is the folio number that gives the record its title and is written in thinner ink.

  3. #3

What faded color is the heading that comes before the dense upper block of text?

    HintPista

It is not the brown ink of the main text, look near the top edge.
