What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an open bound volume photographed from above at a slight angle, with the right-hand folio filling most of the frame. It is a sheet of vellum in creamy ivory with yellowed, uneven edges, visibly cockled and creased with age and handling. A dense block of handwritten text in reddish-brown ink covers the center, in small Greek minuscule arranged in tight horizontal lines following faint ruling. Near the lower left of the text block a slightly larger initial stands out, with a darker stroke and a small ochre-brown halo or stain around it. The parchment shows scattered spots, a greenish tideline of damp staining along the top margin and smaller foxing marks elsewhere, plus wrinkles that catch soft light. To the left the thickness of the book is visible, with hundreds of layered leaves and darkened, gilded edges at the fore-edge. The background is a neutral gray and the lighting is soft and diffuse. No gold, colour illumination or figures appear on this particular page, only script and the material qualities of the vellum.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the cockled surface and age spots of the vellum, then follow the tiny, regular lines of brown Greek script. Pause on the modest enlarged initial low on the page and the damp stains at the top, details that signal a working text page rather than a display illumination.

ContextContexto

This is folio 153 verso from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated to about 1000–1100, from Byzantium, Constantinople, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The complete volume has 428 leaves with Greek texts, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding, and is classified as a Bound Volume in the Medieval Art department. While this folio is text only, each of the four gospels in the book opens on a brilliantly illuminated page with borders depicting the evangelist, birds — chiefly peacocks as symbols of immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life. Its sophistication suggests it was probably written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. The maker is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Even though this folio is plain, the same manuscript contains opening pages richly illuminated with gold, peacocks and fountains, standard Byzantine symbols for eternal life and salvation.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on what time has left on the creamy ivory parchment. I see wrinkles, waves, uneven yellowed edges and greenish damp stains on the upper margin. The compact block of Greek text in reddish brown ink is very dense and follows faint ruled lines. Near the bottom there is a slightly larger initial with an ochre smudge around it. I am moved by the gilded and darkened edges and the thickness of the 428 leaves. There is no gold or illustration here, only the honest patina of a thousand years.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Like someone watching constellations, I look at this folio 153 verso and see an orderly sky of tiny Greek lines. Each row feels like a stable orbit drawn in reddish brown ink on a creamy ivory parchment that looks like an old wrinkled moon. The dark spots and greenish stains are like passing nebulae. I know that in this 428-leaf book each gospel opens with bright borders with peacocks and fountains of life, but here everything is sober, just text and silence.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and wrinkly like my grandma's skin. It is creamy colored with little brown and green spots on top, as if water fell on it long ago. It has lots of tiny reddish brown letters all squeezed together that I do not understand because they are in Greek. Near the bottom there is a bigger letter with an ochre spot. On the left you can see how chubby it is, with so many pages and a golden edge. I imagine someone wrote it by hand a thousand years ago in a monastery.
