The photograph shows an open bound volume seen from slightly above, against a dark gray background. The fully visible left page is a sheet of aged vellum, cream and ivory in tone, with uneven, yellowed edges, soft wrinkles, and a slightly undulating surface that catches the light. Along the left side, the thickness of many stacked leaves is visible; on the right, only a narrow strip of the facing page appears, with stitching and worn binding at the top corner. The text, in Greek, occupies mainly the upper and middle-right portions of the page, leaving broad empty margins, especially across the lower half. It is written in small, dense, flowing script in brown and reddish-brown ink, arranged in closely spaced lines. Near the top there is a faded line of larger lettering, possibly a heading, blurred and ghostlike. In the lower-middle section the script becomes noticeably larger, bolder, and darker for several lines, and a few enlarged initial letters project slightly into the left margin. Small reddish marks and initials punctuate the text. There are faint purple-brown stains in the upper-left corner, small spots, creases, and darkened areas near some line endings, all signs of age and use.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the empty lower half of the page and then move upward toward the denser writing. Notice the shift to larger, darker lettering in the lower-middle section, which breaks the rhythm of the page. Finally, look at the stains and folds along the edges: they make the age and handling of the volume visible.

ContextContexto

This is folio 165, verso, from a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made by an unknown author in Byzantium, likely in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the volume has 428 leaves with text in Greek, written in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, birds — mainly peacocks, symbols of the soul's immortality — and fountains of life. That decoration is not visible on this particular folio. Its sophistication suggests, though it is not certain, that it was probably produced in a Constantinopolitan monastery.

Curious detailDato curioso

The complete volume contains 428 vellum leaves, so this quiet, mostly undecorated page is only one moment within an exceptionally large and labor-intensive manuscript.

I pause on this vellum that is almost a thousand years old. I see its cream and ivory tone, the yellowed irregular edges, the soft wrinkles and that slightly wavy surface catching the light. Wide margins leave the lower half breathing. At the top the text is small and dense in brown and reddish brown ink, and lower down it suddenly becomes larger and darker, with initials jutting into the margin. The faint purple and brown stains, the creases and the worn binding speak to me of long use and time lived.

I look at this page as if it were a night sky. The cream vellum is the vault and the brown ink text forms tight constellations up top, dense and flowing. In the mid lower area there is a sudden shift, a few larger darker lines shining like nearer stars. The reddish initials are like guide markers. The ghostly header at the top looks like a faded nebula. The wide empty margins remind me of the silence of space that lets everything written breathe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page looks very old and wrinkly like my grandma's skin. It is cream colored with yellow edges and it is a bit bent. At the top there are many tiny brown letters packed together that I do not understand because they are in Greek. Lower down the letters suddenly get big and dark, as if someone wanted to shout something important. There are also tiny little red letters. I like that at the bottom there is a lot of white space, as if they left room to draw later.

  1. #1

In this photo, what color is the main ink of the text covering the upper and middle right part of the page?

    HintPista

Look closely at the small dense letters at the top, they are not black.

  2. #2

Which part of the book is fully visible in the photo: the left page or the right page?

    HintPista

On one side you see the whole vellum sheet with its edges, on the other only a narrow strip peeks through.

  3. #3

On the lower half of the visible page, is there a lot of text or a wide almost empty margin?

    HintPista

Look at the bottom area where the cream vellum appears smooth and without letters.
