What you would seeLo que verías
The photograph shows an open book from above, set against a dark grey background. The main page, on the right, is folio 199 recto: a large sheet of vellum in warm cream and ivory tones, with stained, browned, slightly wavy edges. At the upper right, the number '199' is handwritten in soft grey. The text, in Greek, occupies the upper half in two narrow columns of dense, small, dark brown handwriting, with tiny signs, abbreviations, and marginal numbers in a second ink with reddish touches. Over that block there is a diffuse pinkish-lilac stain, as if colour or damp had spread through the skin. A wavy decorative line separates this zone from the lower half, where two more columns appear extremely faded, ghostly, almost erased, yet still aligned. Faint horizontal ruling guides the lines across the page. Along the right side runs a modern translucent strap holding the volume open; the thickness of many stacked leaves is visible at the fore-edge. At the left, only a sliver of the facing page and the shadow of the gutter are seen. The light is even and soft, revealing the matte, slightly grainy texture of aged vellum.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the contrast between the dark upper text and the almost vanished lower half, as if the page were slowly forgetting itself. Then go to the right edge: the modern transparent strap and the handwritten '199' remind us that this is also a museum object, cared for today. Finally, look for faint ruling lines and small red marks in the margins; they reveal the order behind the handwriting.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 199 (recto) from a Byzantine Gospel Book with Commentaries, made around 1000-1100, probably in a monastery in Constantinople. The volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks as symbols of the immortality of the soul, and fountains linked to the fountain of life and salvation. The exact author is unknown, and which specific passage this folio contains is not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso
The complete volume has 428 leaves; since each leaf has a front (recto) and a back (verso), that amounts to 856 written sides in a single handwritten book.

Look at this ivory-colored vellum, how its edges darkened and warped over the centuries. I see two columns of Greek script in dark brown on top, very sharp, and below two more that are now ghosts, almost erased. That lilac-pink stain and the reddish tone of some notes tell us about humidity, about inks that migrated. The clear strip holding it open is our modern care to avoid touching it. Every wrinkle and fading is time made visible.

I cannot read this Greek, but I am fascinated by its order, like a constellation. Two dense columns on top, aligned on ruled lines, separated by a wavy line from another almost invisible zone below. It is a map of medieval knowledge, copied around 1000-1100 in Constantinople, with 428 leaves in total. The number 199 at the top right places us in that huge universe. It reminds me that contemplation is also a way to find direction.

It looks like a very, very old book that does not want to be closed. The page on the right is big and creamy, like an old tortilla. On top there are lots of tiny letters together in two little blocks and below there are letters that are hiding, you can barely see them. There is a pinkish stain like spilled watercolor. And a clear little strip holds it so it does not move. I imagine someone writing it very carefully many, many years ago.
