What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single open page of an ancient codex, seen at a slight angle, with the spine on the left and the fore-edge on the right. The support is vellum in a warm ivory tone, yellowed with age, with irregular edges and brownish foxing and stains, especially near the top. Across the surface are several blocks of Byzantine Greek script in dark brown, almost sepia ink, in a dense, regular minuscule hand. Each paragraph begins with a slightly larger and darker initial letter, sometimes with a small flourish. Between the main lines there are annotations or commentary in an even smaller, tighter script, characteristic of a Gospel with catena format. In the upper right corner the number 215 is visible in pencil. The lighting is even and emphasizes the matte, slightly wrinkled texture of the parchment, its gentle cockling and the wear along the lower edge. There is no gold illumination or figural decoration on this leaf; all focus is on the calligraphy, the rhythm of the ruled lines, the faded inks, and the traces of time on the material.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the whole page as a field of writing, then move closer to the initial letters that mark each paragraph. Notice the contrast between the main text and the tiny commentary woven between lines. Finally linger on the stains and wrinkles of the vellum, which reveal a thousand years of material history.

ContextContexto

This is folio 215 (recto) from a Gospel Book with Commentaries dated ca. 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople. According to the source, the complete volume has 428 leaves with texts in Greek, executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. Each Gospel opens with a brilliantly illuminated page with evangelist portraits, peacocks —symbols of immortality— and fountains of life. Its level of sophistication suggests it was written and decorated in a monastery in Constantinople. This particular folio shows no such illumination; it is a continuous text and commentary page typical of the book's interior. The maker is unknown and the work belongs to the Medieval Art collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

While this folio is plain, the same manuscript preserves richly illuminated opening pages with gold, peacocks and symbolic fountains, and its modern pencil foliation —like the 215 seen at the top— was added centuries later for study.

This page makes me focus on the material. The warm ivory vellum is yellowed with age, with uneven edges and brown spots from moisture, especially at the top. I see the sepia brown ink, the slightly larger capital letters opening each paragraph and the tiny script of the commentary between lines. The pencil number 215 at the upper right reminds me this book has 428 folios. No gold or figures here, just calligraphy and wear, traces we must preserve without erasing.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to look at this page like an orderly sky. The lines of Byzantine Greek are like rows of stars, regular and dense, and the capital letters mark constellations that help you find your way. Between them, the commentary in smaller script is like marginal notes on the universe, explaining the large through the small. This leaf has no portraits or golden peacocks like other parts of the book, but its rhythm reminds me of an old map made to guide reading with patience.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and wrinkly leaf, cookie colored, with many lines in another language I do not understand. I see tiny brown letters and some bigger ones at the start of each part, as if saying something important starts here. At the top right there is a 215 written in pencil. It has no shiny drawings, just letters and little age spots. I imagine someone writing very carefully many, many years ago in a monastery.
