What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a thick, ancient book open on a dark neutral surface, photographed in three-quarter view from the right. The right-hand page is fully visible, with the bulk of the leaves stacked on the left. The support is vellum in a yellowed ivory tone, stained by moisture and darkened at the edges, especially at the lower right corner and near the gutter. Its texture is matte, slightly cockled and parchment-like, with visible fibers and soft wrinkles. The script, in reddish-brown ink, fills almost the entire page in two blocks: an upper section of tiny, tightly packed cursive in about twenty-two continuous lines, and a lower passage with larger, more ornamental initials marked by small crosses. Ink density varies, with some letters faded. Faint horizontal ruling lines and uneven margins are discernible. The light is soft and even, with no gold illumination visible on this folio, casting gentle shadows across the thickness of the volume. The fore-edge reveals hundreds of overlapping folios, irregular and worn with age. There are no illustrations or illuminated borders in this opening; calligraphy itself is the image.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First scan the page as a dense block of script to sense its rhythm and economy. Then pause on the two enlarged initials in the lower half that signal a new section. Finally notice the staining and worn edges, traces of handling and time on the vellum.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this folio belongs to a Gospel Book with Commentaries of 428 leaves with Greek texts, made with ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a leather binding. It is dated to ca. 1000–1100 and attributed to Byzantium, Constantinople, probably written and decorated in a monastery due to its high level of sophistication. Each of the four Gospels in the volume opens with brilliantly illuminated borders depicting the author as well as birds — principally peacocks, symbols of immortality — and fountains representing the fountain of life. Folio 257 verso shown here is a text and commentary page without figurative illumination. The name of the scribe or illuminator is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although this folio shows only text, the complete manuscript preserves openings where each Gospel begins with illuminated frames featuring peacocks and fountains, Byzantine symbols of salvation and immortality.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see this skin turned vellum is no longer smooth, it is rippled with fine wrinkles and darkened at the edge by damp, especially on the lower right corner. The reddish brown ink shifts in strength and some letters are faded, yet you can still read those twenty two tight lines on top and below the larger initials marked with crosses. I pause at the spine, hundreds of uneven worn folios, and at those stains that tell the thousand year life of this Byzantine Gospel Book made in Constantinople.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this folio is like a night sky full of signs. The reddish brown ink on yellowish ivory looks like constellations arranged in two blocks, above a dense field of twenty two continuous lines and below larger stars, the ornamented initials with crosses marking a new beginning. There is no bright gold here nor peacocks nor fountains of life as in other illuminated folios, just text and commentary in Greek. It is a map for finding your way, made around the year 1000 in Byzantium to be read with monastic patience.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and chubby, as if it has kept many stories inside. It is open and you see many little brown letters all squeezed together, tiny ones on top and bigger ones with little crosses at the bottom. The page is creamy yellowish and a bit stained and wrinkly at the edges, especially down on the right. There are no little bird drawings or golden shine on this page, just letters. I imagine someone in a monastery a very long time ago wrote it with great care.

On this page you see no golden shine or peacocks, how many blocks of text does the conservator describe and how many lines are in the upper one?

    HintPista

Look at the reddish brown ink, on top everything is very tightly packed and below the initial letters are larger.

  2. #2

The leaf is not white, what yellowish tone does it have and where is the dark damp stain most visible?
