What you would seeLo que verías
Shown from directly above and filling almost the entire frame, an open page — the verso of folio 302 — rests on a matte, dark grey surface. At the left, the inner binding and the edges of dozens of stacked leaves are visible, their rims uneven, yellowed, and slightly wavy, revealing the thickness of the volume. The main sheet is vellum in an aged ivory tone, with brown spots, darker corners, and a translucent vertical strip beside the binding, probably a repair or reinforcement. Handwritten Greek text dominates the centre. Near the top is a short block of about eight lines in larger, more widely spaced letters, in dark brown ink with some reddish strokes; above it lies a faded, elongated purple stain. Below, after an enlarged initial in the left margin, a dense block of more than twenty-five lines of small, tight, cursive writing unfolds, full of abbreviations and accents. A small letter appears in the right margin as a mark. Even light reveals the fibrous texture of the parchment, slight creases, soft shadows between leaves, and wear accumulated over centuries.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the material block of leaves at the left, then move to the individual sheet. Next, compare the two text blocks: that contrast is what structures the page. Finally, look for stains and repairs, where reading turns into a history of use.

ContextContexto
This is folio 302, verso, of a Gospel Book with Commentaries, made in Byzantium, probably in a monastery in Constantinople, around 1000–1100. Written in Greek, the volume has 428 leaves and is executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, with a leather binding, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source notes that each Gospel opens with brightly illuminated borders showing its author, peacocks—symbols of the immortality of the soul—and fountains, representing the fountain of life and salvation. The exact scribe or workshop is not known; its sophistication makes the Constantinopolitan monastic origin probable, not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although this page is almost entirely text, the same volume opens each Gospel with illuminated peacocks: in Byzantine symbolism they represented the immortality of the soul.

I focus on the skin that holds the text. It is aged ivory vellum with brownish stains and irregular, wavy edges that speak of centuries of use. Next to the inner spine I see a translucent vertical strip that looks like an old repair and makes me think of ancient hands caring for the book. At the top there is dark brown ink with reddish strokes and a faded purplish stain. Below there is a small, tight cursive script full of abbreviations. Everything shows wear, wrinkles and even light over the fiber.

I see this page like a mapped night sky. At the top a small cluster of about eight lines with large spaced letters shines like bright stars, with reddish touches. Then an initial in the margin marks the start of a dense galaxy of more than twenty five lines of tight Greek script. The vellum is the ivory colored firmament with stains and wrinkles like nebulae. The even light lets me admire the texture and the thickness of the volume stacked on the left, a universe contained in 428 leaves.

This leaf looks very old and wrinkly as if it had traveled a lot. It is ivory colored with little brown spots and dark corners. On the left you can see many little pages piled up and a bit wavy. At the top there are just a few lines with big letters and a light purple stain. Below there are lots of tiny letters very close together that someone wrote by hand in Greek. I like the transparent little stripe near the center that looks like a bandage. You can tell it is a thick and very ancient book.
