What you would seeLo que verías

The sculpture, in slightly warm white marble, stands alone against a graded gray ground, darker above and almost white beneath the base, with no visible pedestal. It fills the center of the image and is shown in three-quarter view, turned toward its left. It is a nude woman carved from her head to just below the hips; the legs are cut off, so the figure seems to rise out of an irregular, rough base, like rocks or the edge of a fountain. Her torso twists gently: her head bows and turns in profile, eyes looking down, while her chest faces more toward us. One hand rests with fingers spread over her right breast; the other drops down and opens over the rounded form between her thighs. Polished skin catches a soft light that models shoulders, breasts, belly and arms, in contrast with the highly worked hair, made of small curls, braids crossing her forehead, and a topknot finished with a small raised shape. She wears plain bracelets on both wrists and on her left arm. Her expression is calm, lips closed, nose straight. Small shadows in the eyes, armpit, navel and between the fingers add depth, and the marble shows faint veining and slightly darker areas near the base.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the twist from her lowered head to her torso and down to her hands, one high and one low. Then look for the contrast between the polished skin and the curled hair and rough base. That lower hand and the fragmentary ending change the reading: she is not simply posing, she seems to be emerging from the water.

ContextContexto

According to the source, *Fata Morgana* was made around 1572 by Giambologna (1529–1608), the Flemish artist active in Italy, after being commissioned by the prominent banker Bernardo Vecchietti. The figure once crowned a fountain and took its name both from the nearby spring that fed it and from the legendary fairy linked to King Arthur, here connected with restoring youth; the source also notes a pun on Vecchietti, whose surname suggests “old.” It is one of only around a dozen marble sculptures by Giambologna, an artist better known for bronze, and its twisting body was meant to reward viewing from every side. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although Giambologna is best known for his bronzes, the source notes that this is one of only around a dozen sculptures he made in marble.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the contrast described in the record: the polished skin that reflects soft light on shoulders, breasts and belly against the rough, irregular base from which the figure seems to emerge. I also notice the highly worked hair, with small curls and crossed braids, and the plain bracelets on the wrists. I am interested in how the slightly warm white marble holds shadows in the eyes, armpit and navel, and darker veining near the base, traces of time and of fountain water.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this figure like a planet viewed at three quarters, turned to its left against a gradient gray background that goes from dark at the top to almost white below. Its twisted torso invites us to walk around it, as the record suggests, to view it from every angle. The gathered hair topped by a tall form reminds me of a crown or a small observatory. That serene downcast gaze and the light modeling the marble make me think of a moon emerging from rocks.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like she is coming out of little rocks and has no legs because she stops just below the hips. She is turned to the side, with her head tilted down looking low, and one hand on her chest and the other lower down. Her hair has many tiny curls with crossed braids on her forehead and she has bracelets on her hands. The marble looks super smooth and shiny on the shoulders and belly, and everything feels calm like she is not in a hurry.
