What you would seeLo que verías

The piece sits in the lower center of a studio photograph against a smooth background that shifts from almost blackish gray at the top to light gray on the supporting surface. It is a low, oval lid, seen slightly from above and from the side, wider than it is tall, with a thick, rounded, irregular rim. Its material reads as rough, porous fired clay in earthy tones: pinkish brown, faded beige, grayish brown, and whitish patches that look like dust or accumulated wear. Soft light from the upper left casts a short, dark shadow beneath the right edge and brings out the roughness, small grains, and cracks. Two heavily eroded raised forms stand on the dome. On the left is a low, rounded bulge; on the right, a narrow, truncated vertical protrusion with a broken tip and a darker surface. Together they seem to be part of a modeled form that is now difficult to recognize, perhaps a handle or a schematic figure integrated into the lid. No inscriptions, painted decoration, or glassy sheen can be seen. Its scale is uncertain without a hand or another object for reference, but the object conveys the fragility of something small, ancient, and handled.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the piece as a simple clay dome, then move up to the two eroded protrusions at its top. That wear changes the reading: it is not just a lid, but the surviving fragment of a larger funerary container. Notice the absence of inscriptions or decoration, which keeps attention on the material and its deterioration.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is the lid of a shawabty jar, made of Nile silt ware by an unknown maker in ancient Egypt between 1295 and 1069 BCE, during Dynasties 19 and 20 of the New Kingdom. It belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which classifies it as funerary equipment. Shawabtys — also spelled ushabti or shabti — were small figures placed in tombs to accompany the deceased and, according to belief, work on their behalf in the afterlife. This container probably held one or more of those figures. It is not known whom it belonged to, where it was found, or what the complete jar looked like.

Curious detailDato curioso

The word ushabti is commonly linked to the ancient Egyptian verb meaning “to answer”: the figure was meant to answer when the deceased was called to work in the afterlife.

When I look at this lid I think about what time has done to it. It is Nile silt ceramic, porous and rough, with pinkish brown, beige and grayish brown tones that have worn away. The two raised lumps on top are heavily eroded, one rounded and one vertical with a broken tip. There is no shine or paint, just whitish spots from dust and wear. I wonder how to stabilize that surface without erasing its history. It is a small and fragile fragment, from between 1295 and 1069 BCE, that once held shawabtys for the afterlife.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This lid reminds me of a tiny planet seen from above. It is oval, low, with a thick and irregular rim, and its surface looks like ground eroded over centuries. The light coming from the upper left creates a short shadow on the right, like a sunset over desert terrain. Those two truncated reliefs could be mountains worn down by wind. It has no inscriptions or shine, just matte earthy tones. It floats on a gray background that fades from dark to light, as if it were suspended in space, still and ancient.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an old cookie or a little stone shaped like a lid. It is short, oval and all scratchy, pinkish brown with little white spots as if it were dusty. On top it has two tiny bumps, one round and one more upright but with its tip broken. It does not shine and it has no little drawings. I feel curious to touch it to see if it feels rough. They say it is very very old, from more than three thousand years ago, and that it held tiny little figures called shawabty to keep someone company on their journey after dying.
