What you would seeLo que verías

Against a dark studio background stands an upright limestone stele, rectangular at the base and rounded at the top, photographed frontally and lit softly from above. Its surface is now matte grey, with beige and brown patches, small losses along the edges, wear at the top, a horizontal crack across the middle and a larger chip at the lower right corner. The relief is divided into two registers. In the upper scene, on the left, two figures sit close together on a bench: in front, a man in profile with a long wig, broad necklace and long garment, his legs extended and one arm reaching forward; behind him, a woman with a tall headdress embraces him with one arm. In the centre rises a table piled with offerings — loaves, vessels and vegetal forms, including what appears to be a lotus bouquet. On the right, a standing man in a short kilt leans toward them, presenting the offering. Above the scene are short vertical columns of hieroglyphs. The entire lower half is filled with ten or so dense vertical columns of carved signs — birds, eyes, reeds, water lines and human figures — arranged with rigorous order.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the left, with the seated couple, and follow the man's outstretched arm toward the offering table. Then look at the standing figure on the right, who completes the exchange between the living and the dead. Finally, drop to the columns of text below: even without reading them, their order makes clear that word and image were inseparable here.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the Stele of Userhat, made in Egypt, probably at Thebes, during the New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, in the reign of Amenhotep III (1391–1353 BCE). It is carved from limestone and was originally painted. Round-topped stelae like this one were commemorative monuments, often placed in tombs or chapels, where scenes of offerings sustained the memory of the deceased and their presence in the afterlife. The names or specific roles of all the figures in the relief are not stated in the source data, so they cannot be identified with certainty.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although today only bare grey stone is visible, the source notes that the stele was originally painted, so in antiquity its figures and hieroglyphs would have appeared in colour, far more vivid and easier to read.

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look at it under raking light and you will see the story of its material. It is limestone, now a matte gray with beige and brown mottling, but it was once painted. I focus on what time has left behind: the small losses along the edges, the wear at the top, that horizontal crack running across the center and the large missing area at the lower right corner. The relief is divided in two: above, the offering scene with the seated couple and the standing offerer, below about ten dense columns of hieroglyphs carved with great precision.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am drawn to its sky-touching shape. It is rectangular at the bottom and rounded at the top, like many commemorative stelae of the New Kingdom. That rounded top reminds me of a horizon, and it makes sense because it comes from Thebes, from the Eighteenth Dynasty, from the time of Amenhotep III, and it was placed in tombs or chapels to keep memory alive in the afterlife. Look at the upper scene lit from above: the couple close together on their bench, the table in the center laden with breads and a lotus bouquet, and the short columns of hieroglyphs crowning the moment like stars.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant stone card so no one is forgotten. At the top there are two people sitting very close together on a bench, the man in front with his long wig and the lady hugging him from behind, and another man standing who brings them food. In the middle there is a little table full of tiny breads and cups and a plant that looks like a lotus. Below there are lots of tiny pictures all lined up, with little birds and little eyes and wavy water lines, all in very neat rows. It is a bit broken and cracked in the middle, but you can still understand the story.
