The object is an arched-top limestone stela, shown frontally against a pale gray wall. Its surface is heavily weathered, with a palette of warm beige, sand and creamy off-white, mottled with darker stains, pitting and faint traces of reddish paint, most visible on the upper baboons. The composition is organized in three horizontal registers defined by incised bands. At the top, a large incised sun disk rests on a crescent shape at the center, both worn and slightly raised; flanking it, a reddish-brown baboon stands on each side with arms raised in adoration, surrounded by narrow vertical columns of finely carved hieroglyphs. The middle register is dominated by a naked child god seated frontally on a fully opened lotus blossom, finger to mouth with a side-lock of youth, flanked on either side by kneeling winged female figures wearing sun disks who extend their long, feathered wings protectively toward him. At the far left and far right of this tier are smaller standing figures, a lioness-headed goddess and a priest in a panther skin, now heavily abraded. The bottom register shows two seated figures facing offering tables, attended by several smaller standing attendants, all interspersed with horizontal and vertical hieroglyphic inscriptions. The edges of the slab are chipped and irregular, especially along the top arch and base, and the overall texture is rough, porous and timeworn.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the central disk and crescent at the top, then move to the adoring baboons to grasp the solar theme. Look down to the child on the lotus and notice how the wings of Maat symmetrically enclose him. Finally examine the small hieroglyphic columns and the worn surface that hints at former gilding and color.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this stela belonged to Shedsunefertem, High Priest of Ptah, and is dated to 945–924 BCE, in Dynasty 22 of the Third Intermediate Period during the reign of Shoshenq I. It is carved from limestone that was originally painted and gilded. The imagery is rich in solar and religious symbolism: the gilded disk and crescent at the top, baboons adoring Ra at dawn, the child god on the lotus evoking the sun emerging from the primeval waters at creation, and winged figures of Maat, goddess of Truth, in protection. The high priest himself, in panther skin and jackal collar, is shown worshipping the god Ptah and his consort Sekhmet, while colleagues appear in the lower register as dependents under his protection. No further findspot information is given beyond its status as a gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust.

Curious detailDato curioso

Ancient Egyptians believed the chattering of baboons at dawn was a hymn praising the sun god Ra in a secret language understood only by the king.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see it is not just stone. It is limestone in beige and cream tones, heavily eroded, with irregular edges and dark patches of wear. Faint traces of reddish pigment remain on the baboons at the top and the patina speaks of almost three thousand years. I am struck by how the relief is divided into three bands separated by incised lines, with finely carved hieroglyphs that are now badly faded. I think about what was lost: the color, the gilding, the original shine.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this stone is a carved sky. At the top, in the center, a large solar disk over a crescent moon, flanked by two reddish baboons with raised arms as if worshipping the dawn. It is the story of the sun reborn each morning. In the middle, the naked child god seated on an open lotus flower, with his side lock and finger to his mouth, evokes the birth of the sun at creation. Everything is astronomy turned into symbol, an eternal dawn in limestone.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a three-layer cake made of stone. At the top there is like a sun on top of a little moon and two red monkeys raising their hands as if saying hi sun! In the middle there is a baby with no clothes sitting on a flower, with two ladies with wings taking care of him like bodyguards. On the sides there is a lady with a lion head and a man with a spotted cape like a panther. At the bottom there are tiny people around little tables with food.
