What you would seeLo que verías

A single stone blade sits at the center of the image, isolated against a smooth, even gray background with no strong shadows. Its outline is an elongated, asymmetrical triangle: the left side is broad, almost vertical, and slightly irregular, while the edges narrow toward the right and end in a sharp, horizontally pointing tip. The upper edge slopes down in a nearly straight line; the lower edge curves more gently, reinforcing the impression of a wedge or a large tooth. The entire surface is covered with facets left by knapping. They are broad, shallow flake scars whose fine ridges intersect like waves turned to stone, catching the light unevenly. Honey brown, ochre, beige, and bluish gray dominate, broken up by dark specks, thin veins, and small earthy deposits scattered without a regular pattern. Some areas look glassy and faintly translucent; others are matte and rough. There is no handle, no human figure, and no scale reference, so the object's real size cannot be judged from the photograph alone. The edge looks thin and keen, especially near the point. Seen up close, the stone stops being a simple triangle and becomes a map of blows, glints, and fractures.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette, from the broad left edge to the sharp point, then move in close to the flaked facets. Notice how the upper and lower edges are not identical: that small asymmetry is key to seeing it as a worked tool, not a natural fragment.

ContextContexto

According to the source record, this is a flint sickle blade from Egypt, dated to 1980–1801 BCE, during the Middle Kingdom (2040–1648 BCE) and Dynasty 12. Its author is unknown and it belongs to the category of Tools and Equipment. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. The exact findspot and the name of the person who made or used it are not known. Flint elements like this were probably set into a handle to form part of a sickle for cutting plants; without the complete tool, that reconstruction remains probable rather than certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

Flint tools used repeatedly to cut cereals and other silica-rich plants can develop a bright polish known as sickle sheen, created by friction against the plant stems.

  1. How does your reading of the stone change once you know it was part of a farming tool, rather than a weapon or an ornament?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura de la piedra al saber que formó parte de una herramienta agrícola y no de un arma o un adorno?
  2. What traces of the hands that shaped and used it can you imagine in its ridges and scars?¿Qué huellas de las manos que la tallaron y la usaron puedes imaginar en sus aristas y cicatrices?
  3. What is lost when a tool is shown without its handle, its user, and the landscape where it worked?¿Qué se pierde cuando una herramienta se muestra sin su mango, sin quien la usaba y sin el paisaje donde trabajaba?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see this blade is not smooth, it is a relief of ancient strikes. Each broad shallow flake leaves a fine ridge that catches light differently. I notice the ochre, honey brown, beige and bluish gray tones with dark patches and thin veins. Some areas look glassy and translucent next to matte earthy spots. The edge appears thin and sharp, especially near the pointed tip facing to the right.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this flint like a constellation trapped in stone. Its outline is an elongated asymmetric triangle, with the left side broad and almost vertical and the sharp tip pointing to the right horizontally. The smooth gray background with no strong shadows makes it float, like an isolated object in space. The flake scars cross the surface like petrified waves, with uneven glints. It comes from the Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, between 1980 and 1801 BCE.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant stone tooth or a dragon claw. It is a long triangle that gets skinnier until it ends in a little point on the right. It has many mixed colors like honey, light brown and gray with dark speckles. If you touch it with your eyes it looks scratchy with little sparkles in some spots. It sits alone in the center on a gray background, with no handle or people. I imagine it cuts plants like a sickle even though now it is all alone.
