What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal Baroque triumph unfolds as a painted tapestry within an illusionistic border. At centre-right a gilded chariot with large spoked wheels moves forward, drawn by several white and dapple-grey horses shown in dramatic foreshortening, manes flying and mouths open. A crowned female figure in red and ivory drapery stands on the chariot holding aloft a golden monstrance with the Host, while an angel places a crown on her head and cherubs, a white dove, and winged allegories with trumpets and palm fronds swarm around her. Beneath the wheels two muscular, bearded, semi-nude male figures lie trampled in twisted poses, one face down wearing a blue cloth. To the left, women in flowing gowns restrain the horses and carry attributes such as keys and a canopy. The sky blends turquoise, cream and pink clouds with a radiant burst of light behind the monstrance. The whole scene is framed by a fictive architectural border with twisted Solomonic columns in gold, fruit garlands and putti along the top, its surface showing worn wood and gilding that mimics a hanging tapestry.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the glowing monstrance at centre-right and follow the surging diagonal of the horses to the left. Notice how the trampled figures beneath the wheels shift the festive procession into an allegory of victory. Look at the painted frame that pretends to be a tapestry border, with its columns and putti along the upper edge.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil on panel, dated after 1628, is likely a copy after Peter Paul Rubens’s oil sketch for the Triumph of the Eucharist tapestry series. The tapestries were commissioned by Isabella Clara Eugenia, daughter of Philip II of Spain, for the Convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid, where the finished weavings still hang. The original oil sketch is held in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. The work belongs to the European Painting and Sculpture department and is catalogued as Flemish. The maker of this copy is not securely known, but the composition closely follows Rubens’s dynamic, theatrical Baroque design.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I first look at the support: it is oil on panel, a copy made after 1628 after Rubens oil sketch for the tapestries of The Triumph of the Eucharist. I notice the illusionistic frame with gilded Solomonic columns, fruit garlands and two putti, where the gold and wood look worn. At the center, the golden chariot, the horses in violent movement and the illuminated monstrance show the Baroque theatricality that I must stabilize without erasing the history of wear.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am drawn to that turquoise and pink sky opening behind the monstrance. It is not a realistic sky, but a Baroque burst of light that makes the host shine like a sun. I see the white dove suspended among luminous clouds, surrounded by cherubs and angels with trumpets. Below, the movement of the horses and chariot contrasts with the luminous calm above. It is as if Rubens had painted a golden eclipse where the heavenly breaks into the earthly.

I love it because it looks like a chariot race! The golden chariot goes super fast pulled by white horses with open mouths and manes flying. On top there is a lady with a red and white cape holding up a shiny golden thing and an angel puts a crown on her. There are lots of little angels flying and a little dove. Below there are two men lying under the wheels making faces. Everything has bright colors and looks like a party in the sky.
