What you would seeLo que verías
The obverse and reverse of a circular bronze medal are shown side by side, photographed frontally against a soft gradient gray background. The medal has a worn golden-brown patina, slightly irregular beaded rims and shallow relief. In the center of the obverse, a rider on horseback is depicted in profile facing left: he wears a tricorn hat and fitted coat and extends a command baton forward; his horse is mid-trot with one foreleg raised. A Latin inscription in capital letters runs around the upper edge, and at the bottom, on a small ornamental base with scrollwork, is inscribed LISSA DEC 5 1757. The reverse depicts a battle scene: in the foreground, fallen soldiers and horses lie on the ground; in the middle, a large plume of smoke rises from an explosion; in the background, dense lines of infantry are arranged in formation. Latin text also encircles the top, with ROSSBACH NOV 5 1757 inscribed at the base. The lighting is even and diffused, emphasizing the relief and casting soft shadows; there are pale spots of corrosion, most noticeably a whitish blemish near the top of the reverse. The object appears handheld in scale, with a rough, aged metallic texture and antique character.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the mounted figure on the obverse and follow the circular Latin legend to grasp its claim to power. Then move to the chaotic battle on the reverse and contrast the order of the portrait side with the violence of combat. Linger on the smoke cloud and fallen figures to see how the medal celebrates triumph while also displaying its cost.
ContextContexto
This is a bronze commemorative medal from 1757 dedicated to Frederick II of Prussia, known as Frederick the Great, made by an unknown maker in 18th-century Germany. According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is classified as sculpture in the Department of European Painting and Sculpture. The inscriptions record two Prussian victories in the Seven Years War: Rossbach on November 5 and Leuthen, referred to as Lissa, on December 5, 1757. The obverse text identifies the king as defender of the Protestants. The engraver and exact circumstances of striking are not known, but such medals served as propaganda and political souvenirs at the time.

Curious detailDato curioso
The two dates inscribed, Rossbach and Lissa, refer to two decisive victories won by Frederick the Great only a month apart in November and December 1757 during the Seven Years War, events widely celebrated in contemporary medals and prints.

I focus on the golden brown patina and the worn dentated edge, that shallow relief tells a lot about time passing. I notice the whitish corrosion on the upper reverse and the pale spots, traces of humidity and handling. I am interested in how the soft diffuse light reveals the rough bronze texture and the horse trotting. It is a small piece, made to be held in the hand, so every Latin inscription and every date required very precise engraving. Preserving it means stabilizing that fragility.

This medal reminds me that we also measure time with battles, not only with stars. Obverse and reverse mark two dates like constellations: Rossbach on November 5 and Lissa on December 5, 1757, exactly one month apart. The rider with tricorn and baton advances as if guiding an orbit, while on the reverse the dense smoke is a dark nebula. It is a propaganda calendar in bronze, portable, that tried to fix victory in memory.

They look like two giant magic coins. On one there is a man with a funny hat on a horse lifting a little leg, it seems he is playing at giving orders. On the other there is a lot of smoke like a volcano and tiny soldiers lying down and little lines in the back. I like that it has letters around it like a secret and numbers at the bottom that say 1757. It looks old and brownish, with white spots, and its edges have little teeth. I would keep it in my pocket like treasure.
