What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a plain, very pale gray background stands an ancient jug, photographed from the front and slightly to one side. Its lower half is a nearly spherical body, broad and seemingly heavy, resting without any clearly visible flat base. From its top rises a long, narrow, cylindrical neck that suddenly widens into a flaring, trumpet-like mouth. On the right, a thick, flattened handle joins the neck to the shoulder of the body, leaving a dark oval opening between the two. The surface is dark ceramic, ranging from charcoal gray and grayish brown to dull black, covered with pale patches, scratches, and small worn areas that reveal its age. There is no figural painting; the decoration is in relief. A thin vertical band runs down the front of the body, another crosses the shoulder, and on the right there is a raised circle, also in relief. Near the junction of neck and mouth, a fine ring encircles the neck. Soft, diffuse light from the left models the rounded volume, lightens the left edge, and casts a short shadow to the right. The texture looks rough, earthy, and porous, in contrast to the clean neutrality of the background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the heavy, round body and the tall, narrow neck topped by a wide mouth. Then follow the raised band down the front and look for the circle in relief on the shoulder. Those plain lines, rather than any painted scene, are the decoration—and they also make the worn, mottled surface easier to read.

ContextContexto

According to its source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a jug by an unknown maker, dated to about 1600–1450 BCE and attributed to Cyprus in the Late Cypriot I period. It was made in the technique known as base-ring ware, a ceramic characteristic of Late Bronze Age Cyprus, recognizable by its fine fabric, dark burnished surface, and decoration in relief. Wares of this kind circulated widely around the eastern Mediterranean. We do not know who made it, where it was found, or exactly what liquid it held; it probably served for pouring or storing. It came to the museum as a gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: there is no painted ornament at all. All of the decoration is made by thin strips and a circle of clay raised above the surface, so it would have been felt by the fingers as much as seen by the eye.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time has written on the surface. This base-ring ware jug, from Cyprus between 1600 and 1450 BCE, has a fine fabric with a dark burnished finish between charcoal gray and grayish brown. I see pale spots, scratches and wear that speak of centuries. Its almost spherical body supports a long narrow neck ending in a flaring rim. I am drawn to the reliefs: a vertical band, another on the shoulder and a raised circle. All modeled by soft light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see it like a small planet with its own equator. Its globular heavy body reminds me of a sphere suspended on a light gray background like a starless sky. The long neck looks like a telescope opening in a trumpet mouth toward the cosmos. The thick handle on the right leaves a dark oval gap, like an eclipse. Light comes from the left and creates a short shadow on the right, just as the sun models the moon. It is sober, with no painting, only relief.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very serious chubby belly standing in the middle of the photo. It has a big round belly like a ball, a long skinny neck like a giraffe and on top a little mouth that opens like a trumpet to sing. On one side it has a big flat ear to hold it. It is dark colored, like gray with light spots, and all scratched as if it had played a lot. It has no little drawings, just a standing line, a lying line and a bumpy little circle. I like it!

¡Me gusta!

How many raised bands or lines are described on the front and shoulder of the jug and what extra shape accompanies them on the right?

    HintPista

Look at the chubby body of the jug: search for what sticks out from the dark surface, not painted.

  2. #2

Looking at the jug in profile, what part is wide and spherical below and what part is long and thin above before opening like a trumpet?

    HintPista

Follow the silhouette from the invisible base to the top rim and name each section.

  3. #3

From which side does the light come that brightens the edge of the jug and where does its short shadow fall?
