Violence as object: a dagger made to be looked at, its blade withheld from view.

What you would seeLo que verías
A single dagger in its scabbard stands perfectly vertical in the centre of a plain, pale grey-white background, pommel at the top and rounded scabbard tip at the bottom. The blade itself is nowhere to be seen. What fills the frame is dense, dark gold ornament: the waisted grip, slightly narrower in the middle and capped by a rounded, almost squared pommel, is covered in fine openwork filigree of scrolling vines and tiny figures or motifs, shadowed black in the recesses so the gilded metal reads almost like lace. A ridged, ringed collar separates grip from scabbard. Below it, a broad banded throat carries more patterned registers before the long scabbard tapers gently downward. Down its centre runs a vertical line of small turquoise-blue insets, like beads of colour spaced along the dark ground, guiding the eye to the rounded end, which finishes in curling volutes and a circular medallion. The metal looks worn and matte rather than polished, with soft highlights and little shadow on the backdrop. The whole object feels less like a tool laid out for inspection than a piece of jewellery photographed upright, symmetrical, still, and self-contained.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First note that the blade is hidden. Then follow the tiny turquoise points down the scabbard: they turn a weapon into an ornament.
ContextContexto
Dated to about 1750 and attributed to Northeast India, this dagger is listed by the Cleveland Museum of Art as brass with a gilt grip, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wade. Its maker is unknown. In 18th-century South Asia, finely worked daggers could serve as weapons, status symbols, and ceremonial dress items at once; which role this example played is not documented. Because the blade is sheathed, its material and condition cannot be judged from this view.

Curious detailDato curioso
The most surprising thing is structural: the part meant for cutting is completely invisible, while all the visible labour — filigree, gilding, stones — goes into covering and holding it.

I pause on what is not visible: the blade is sheathed so I cannot speak about its edge or its steel. What I do observe is the outer work, a brass with a gilt hilt that today looks matte and softly worn. The pierced filigree leaves black shadows between the golden stems and almost reads like lace. I am drawn to that central line of turquoise blue inlays running down the scabbard and the collar of ridged rings joining the two parts. Everything suggests care and contained use.

I see this dagger as a vertical constellation against a whitish gray sky. The pommel at the top is like a starting star and the rounded tip at the bottom is the end of the journey. The row of turquoise blue dots down the center reminds me of an alignment of planets guiding the eye from top to bottom. The golden filigree around it looks like a dense nebula hiding the blade, just as dust hides the light of a star.

It looks like a pirate treasure that does not want to fight. It stands very straight in the middle, with its little hat on top and its round shoe at the bottom. It is all dressed in gold with tiny plant drawings that look like lace and it has turquoise blue sparkles in a line like buttons. You cannot see its blade because it is sleeping inside its case. I like that it ends in little curls and a small circle, like a jewel for dressing up and not for cutting.

It is what would normally shine outside the case, but here it is kept inside.
