What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground, an ancient silver coin photographed from directly above on a plain light background fills almost the entire frame, slightly tilted. The flan is irregular, nearly circular with small nicks and worn edges. At the center, in high relief, a barley ear is shown frontally and vertically, with a thick central grain and two smaller, thinner lateral ears fanning outward; each kernel is marked by fine incisions suggesting beards and scales, with a rough texture and uneven metallic shine from age and handling. Around the upper edge runs a dotted border, a beaded circle, now partly erased by corrosion and wear. To the right of the ear, faint archaic Greek letters are barely legible. Raking light from the side casts deep shadows that emphasize the relief and reveal a mottled patina of dull silver, soft grey and darker oxidized patches. The smooth background isolates the object, whose tiny scale is suggested by the handmade die details and the granularity of the metal surface.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central ear and follow the fine beards radiating outward to the sides. Then trace the beaded border along the rim and look for the faint letters on the right; the wear and uneven relief show it was hand-struck, not cast.
ContextContexto
Silver stater struck circa 530–510 BCE at Metapontion, a Greek colony in Magna Graecia in southern Italy, held in the Greek and Roman Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. By an unknown maker, it is classified as Coins and made in silver. The barley ear was the civic badge of Metapontion, a region renowned for fertile land and agricultural wealth, and it appears consistently on its Archaic coinage. No further historical details are recorded except the credit as Gift of J. H. Wade. The obverse shown corresponds to the incuse type characteristic of the area in the Archaic period.

Curious detailDato curioso
Metapontion used the barley ear as its civic coin emblem for over two centuries, and many of its earliest coins feature an incuse technique with the same design raised on one side and sunk on the other.

If you look closely you will see this silver does not shine like new, it has an opaque grayish patina with dark oxidized areas and wear. I notice the high relief of the vertical barley ear, with rough incisions marking the beards of the grain. The dotted border near the rim is almost erased by corrosion and handling, and to the right you can barely make out some very worn archaic Greek letters. The raking light helps reveal the handmade die relief.

To me this coin is like a tiny silver moon photographed from above against a clear background. It fills almost the whole frame and its almost circular but irregular shape recalls a cratered disc. The central vertical ear with two smaller side ears fanning out looks like an ordered constellation. The border of dots around it is like a ring of stars partially erased. The uneven metallic shine and strong shadows make each bit of relief look like a crater lit from the side.

It looks like a squashed silver cookie! It is not perfectly round, it has little nicks on the edge as if someone nibbled it. In the center there is a little plant with three tiny ears, the middle one bigger and two small ones on the sides like whiskers. Around it there are little dots like a pearl necklace but a bit erased. On one side there are tiny hidden letters very worn down. I like that it shines just a little and has small shadows.
