What you would seeLo que verías

On aged ivory paper with softly rounded corners and faint foxing, a coat of arms is printed in deep black ink, centered and dominant. The shield has an ornate oval rococo cartouche, its field covered in a bold checkerboard of light and dark squares, crossed diagonally by a bend bearing three lions rampant, each carefully hatched to show mane, paws and tail. Surrounding the shield is an elaborate frame of scrolling acanthus, shell-like volutes and floral garlands with fully bloomed roses and smaller blossoms, rendered with fine crosshatching and delicate shading. At the crest, atop the cartouche, a pelican with outspread wings bends over a nest to feed its young, feathers articulated with tight parallel lines. Below the shield a blank, ribbon-like scroll curls outward, awaiting a motto. At the bottom, in elegant cursive script, it reads «Gardiner Chandler» with the smaller signature «P Revere sculp» to the right. In the upper corners appear handwritten notations «Nº» and «[2]». The light is flat as befits an engraving, the contrast crisp, and the surface shows the precise, etched texture of intaglio lines on slightly toned paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the checkered center and follow the diagonal band with its three lions, then trace the swirling rococo frame and flowers outward. Notice the pelican at the top and the empty scroll below, small elements that shift the image from decoration to personal emblem.

ContextContexto

This is a bookplate, a mark of ownership pasted into books, engraved by American silversmith and engraver Paul Revere II (1735–1818), active in Boston. According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, it is dated circa 1750–1818, within his working life, and executed as an engraving. The arms display a checkered field with a bend charged with lions and a pelican in her piety as crest, a common heraldic symbol of self-sacrifice. The inscription identifies the owner as Gardiner Chandler. No further details about the patron are given in the source record, but such commissions were typical among well-to-do New England families who used bookplates to signal literacy and status.

Curious detailDato curioso

While Paul Revere is famous for his midnight ride in 1775, he made his living chiefly as a silversmith and produced many engraved bookplates, trade cards and political prints in colonial Boston.

If you look closely you will see the ivory colored paper with softly rounded edges and tiny age spots that matter so much to me. The black ink is intense and leaves very fine crosshatched lines that reveal the pressure of the engraving process. I love the sharp contrast between the light background and the rococo frame with scrolls, shells and garlands of roses and five petal flowers. Below, the empty ribbon and the signature P Revere sculp remind us this is handmade work to mark books with care.

This coat of arms makes me think of constellations and old maps. The checkered field with light and dark squares looks like a gridded sky for navigation, crossed by a diagonal band with three rampant lions like three stars in alignment. At the top the pelican with open wings over its nest is like a protective constellation feeding its young. The whole design is surrounded by scrolls and garlands that swirl like orbits and recalls how in colonial America marking a book also meant marking your place in the universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Look at how many little decorations it has! There is a fancy shield with light and dark little squares and three tiny lions with tails going diagonally as if climbing a slide. On top there is a big pelican with open wings taking care of its babies in the nest, it looks very loving. Around it there are many pretty little flowers and shells like on a cake. Below there is a little white ribbon with nothing written on it and it says Gardiner Chandler in pretty handwriting. It is like a super fancy sticker so no one loses their book.

I am a little white wavy ribbon under the shield, ready for a motto but with no words, what am I?

    HintPista

It is right below the rococo frame, above the handwritten signature.
