The piece is shown complete and upright, centered against a smooth gray background that is darker at the edges and almost white behind the body. It takes up nearly the full height of the image, so its long, narrow silhouette dominates immediately. At the top, the head is short, rounded, and dark, with two thick, elongated black pegs projecting sideways like a small horizontal bar. From there descends a very slender neck, lacquered in black and reddish brown and decorated with golden flowers and leaves repeated in clusters down to its base. Below, the body is almost square, with rounded corners and reddish sides bearing dark motifs. Its pale, whitish, slightly translucent front shows faint veining, soft shadows, and a more opaque arched area near the top. Two fine strings run down the neck and across the front to a dark, woven or knotted fitting at the bottom. To the right, separate and floating at mid-height, is a large, flat, ivory-colored plectrum: narrow at the top and wide, almost triangular, at the bottom. Diffuse light without hard shadows reveals the satiny sheen of the lacquer, the matte surface of the front, and the smoothness of the plectrum.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the long, flower-covered neck from top to bottom, then notice how the pale, quiet body anchors the whole instrument. Look next at the plectrum floating beside it: its size changes the reading, because this is not only a decorated object but a tool made to be played. Finally, compare the glossy lacquer with the matte front surface.

ContextContexto

According to the source, the work is titled Guitar, is by an unknown maker, dates from the early to mid-1800s, and comes from Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868). It is classified as a musical instrument in mixed media in the Japanese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. From its body, its long fretless neck, and the accompanying plectrum, it probably is a shamisen, a traditional Japanese lute played with a plectrum called a bachi. The source does not specify its exact materials, the precise place where it was made, or who played it; nor is it known whether its golden floral decoration had a particular symbolic meaning.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the separate plectrum is almost as wide at its lower end as several of the golden flowers on the neck, which helps convey the force and breadth of the gesture used to strike the strings.

If you look with my eyes, the first thing is the contrast of finishes. The black and reddish neck shines with satin lacquer and golden flowers repeated in clusters, while the almost square body combines reddish sides with a pale, whitish and slightly translucent top, with soft grain and an opaque arch above. Two thin strings run straight down to a dark knotted tailpiece and the short pegbox shows two black side pegs. I am struck by how the glossy and matte surfaces coexist with no visible cracks under soft light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me it looks like a vertical rocket framed against a gray background that brightens behind the body, like a dawn sky. The very long neck is the trajectory and the almost square body with rounded corners is the launch base. At the top, the two pegs form a horizontal bar like antennas. And to the right the ivory colored plectrum floats alone, wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, like a small satellite companion. The two thin strings are two orbit lines keeping everything aligned and suspended in emptiness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a super long and skinny guitar standing all by itself. At the top it has two little black sticks poking out to the sides like tiny ears and a long stick with shiny golden little flowers going down and down. At the bottom it has a squarish box with rounded corners, like a lunchbox, in a light color with reddish sides. It has two little threads going from top to bottom and on one side there is a creamy triangle shaped pick to play it. I like it because it is shiny!
