What you would seeLo que verías

A frontal photograph of a circular bronze medal standing upright on a light gray surface, against a smooth background that shifts from darker gray at the top to almost white below. The medal fills the center of the frame and casts a short, dark, elliptical shadow. Its raised rim encloses a portrait in high relief, seen in strict right-facing profile: forehead, straight nose, closed lips, firm chin, and a truncated neck and bust cut off diagonally at the bottom. The most animated area is the hair, long and abundant, falling behind the ear in dense, carved waves and curls that catch the light. The bronze has a dark brown patina with warmer, reddish highlights on the hair, nose, and rim, and a matte, slightly worn texture. Around the portrait, following the curve of the edge, are incised capital letters: “ALBERTVS” on the left and “THORWALDSEN” on the right. At the bottom center, in very small letters, a signature is barely legible. On the upper rim there is a tiny notch, a modest flaw that breaks the otherwise regular circle.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the silhouette of the face and hair against the flat field, then read the inscription curving around the rim. Look closely at the small signature at the bottom and the nick on the upper edge, details that turn an idealized portrait into a handled object.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as Medal: Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen, made in Germany in 1828 in bronze, by an unknown author. It belongs to metalwork in the Department of Decorative Art and Design at the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Mrs. Jerome B. Zerbe. Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) was a Danish sculptor associated with Neoclassicism, widely known in Europe during his lifetime. This medal was therefore made while he was still alive. The reverse is not shown in the image, and it is not known from the available data who commissioned it or for what specific occasion.

Curious detailDato curioso

Thorvaldsen was still alive in 1828, the date on the medal, so this is a lifetime portrait rather than a posthumous memorial.

I pause to look at how the bronze has aged. I see a dark brown patina, matte and slightly worn, with warmer reddish highlights where light catches the relief. What interests me most is the contrast between the sharp profile and the hair, with dense waves and curls where light gets tangled and reveals the chisel work. I notice the raised rim and that tiny notch at the top that breaks the perfect circle. It is a sober piece, made to last and to be handled with respect.

To me this medal is like a small moon. It is a perfect circle, standing upright on a light gray surface, casting a very short oval shadow. I like how the bronze catches light differently on each relief, like illuminated craters. The profile portrait looks to the right, orderly and solemn. I read ALBERTVS on the left and THORWALDSEN on the right, following the curve like an orbit. That tiny notch at the top reminds me of a small eclipse on the edge.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant coin for a giant. It is round and brown like dark chocolate, with a man in profile who has lots of curly hair. He has a straight nose and looks very serious, as if he does not want to smile for the photo. Around him his name is written in big letters. If I touch it I feel it would be a bit rough and cold. At the top it has a tiny chip, as if it fell. I wonder if I could spin it like a top.
