What you would seeLo que verías
This vertical photograph captures the moment just after a white rocket lifts off, already airborne against an intense blue sky with almost no clouds. In the upper center, the Antares rises in a straight line: its body is narrow, elongated, and smooth, with a rounded tip and small dark markings barely visible on the fuselage. Beneath it burns a bright flame in white, yellow, and orange, followed by a thin, irregular, luminous trail of smoke that descends until it disappears behind the launch pad. The lower third is dominated by two enormous masses of white smoke and vapor, dense and billowing, expanding sideways like an explosion in slow motion. On the left stands a tall, slender white water tower supported by crisscrossed metal legs; its upper tank looks small next to the cloud of smoke. Thin antennas, light poles, low structures, and a small observation tower on the right can also be made out. In the foreground lies flat, dry, beige sandy ground, with a low white rectangular building, fencing, a narrow road in the bottom left corner, and low vegetation. The daylight is clear and direct, producing sharp edges, short shadows, and a strong contrast between the blue sky, the dazzling white smoke, and the dry earth. The scale feels overwhelming: although distant, the rocket commands the vertical axis, while the human-built facilities are reduced to a strip along the bottom.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the tiny rocket at the top and slowly follow its trail of fire down to the launch pad. Then compare its slender silhouette with the enormous cloud spreading across the ground: the most spectacular effect is happening below, not in the sky. Notice, too, how the water tower gives the whole scene its sense of scale.
ContextContexto
According to its NASA Image and Video Library record, this photograph by Bill Ingalls documents the test launch of Orbital Sciences Corporation's Antares rocket on Sunday, April 21, 2013. It took place from Pad-0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS), part of NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, United States. The source describes it as the first flight of Antares and the first rocket launch from Pad-0A. Instead of a real spacecraft, the rocket carried a mass-simulated payload—the equivalent mass of a spacecraft—into Earth orbit, a common test-flight procedure for checking performance without risking a complete mission. The exact time of day and the camera's distance are not stated in the record.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual fact: the white cloud at ground level spreads far wider than the rocket is tall in the frame, so the launch is felt more as an expanding mass at the bottom than as the slender vehicle already climbing above it.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What does it do to our sense of a launch that the rocket is already small and distant while its smoke still overwhelms the ground?¿Qué le hace a nuestra idea de un despegue que el cohete ya se vea pequeño y lejano mientras su humo sigue invadiendo el suelo?
- How does the water tower change the way we understand the size and power of what is happening?¿Cómo cambia la torre de agua nuestra comprensión del tamaño y la potencia de lo que está ocurriendo?
- Is this an image of technology, of landscape, or of the exact instant when the two stop being separable?¿Es esta una imagen de tecnología, de paisaje, o del instante exacto en que ambas cosas dejan de poder separarse?

If you look closely, this vertical photo is a document from April 21, 2013. At the center Antares climbs straight with its smooth white body and rounded tip, leaving a luminous trail of white, yellow and orange fire. Below the white smoke is spongy and huge. On the left I notice the white water tower with crossed metal legs. I am interested in the contrast between the intense blue of the sky and the white of the vapor that covers everything.

As an amateur I am excited to know this was the first flight of Antares and the first launch from Pad-0A at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport in Wallops, Virginia. According to the NASA Image and Video Library, the Orbital Sciences rocket lifted off on a test without a real spacecraft, only with a payload simulating the mass of a spacecraft. Seeing it already airborne, against that almost cloudless blue sky, with its bright flame and column of smoke, is like glimpsing the start of a path to space.

Wow, it looks like a giant pencil flying! The rocket is white, super skinny and goes straight up leaving a little tail of orange and yellow fire. Down below there are two giant clouds of smoke that look like cotton candy exploding. On the left there is a white tower with little spider legs. Everything is over beige sand and the sky is so so blue. The rocket looks tiny but powerful, as if it were saying bye Earth, here I go!
