What you would seeLo que verías
The image is dominated by a deep, smooth and cloudless blue sky that fills almost the entire frame, creating a sense of vast emptiness. Near the bottom third, slightly off center, a tiny bright point appears: the Antares rocket climbing, seen from a great distance. At its base a very small white flare glows, the engine exhaust, like a distant star. Behind it rises a long, thin vertical trail of whitish and pale gray smoke that fades upward. The plume is not uniform: close to the rocket it is denser and narrow with sharper edges, and as it ascends it widens, becomes more translucent and diffuse until it dissolves into the blue. No ground, pad, or horizon is visible; only sky and trajectory. The scale emphasizes human smallness against altitude. The light is bright daylight, even and clear, with no shadows. The overall texture is soft, though the trail adds a faint graininess. The gesture is upward, quiet and solitary, like a chalk stroke drawn across a blue board, capturing motion through a single delicate line.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the absolute blue, then locate the tiny bright point near the bottom. Follow the contrail upward to sense the distance traveled. Notice how the plume shifts from dense to almost invisible and how that changes the sense of speed and height.
ContextContexto
According to source data, the photograph shows the test launch of the Orbital Sciences Corporation Antares rocket from Pad-0A of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, on Sunday, April 21, 2013. It was the first flight of Antares and the first launch from that pad. The rocket delivered a mass-simulated payload, equivalent in mass to a spacecraft, into Earth orbit. The image is credited to NASA/Bill Ingalls and belongs to the NASA Image and Video Library. No further details about ground operations are provided, but the clear sky suggests favorable weather conditions for the test.

Curious detailDato curioso
This mission, designated A-ONE, was the maiden flight of Antares, later used for Commercial Resupply Services missions to the International Space Station.

What holds my attention here is the emptiness. So much uninterrupted blue is fragile for a photograph: any stain, fading or loss would be immediately visible. I look at the plume as if it were a delicate brushstroke, denser and grayish below, near the white glow of the engine, and more translucent and wider above until it dissolves. Preserving that soft gradient and that even, diurnal light is preserving the exact memory of April 21, 2013, an intense and clear sky that served as backdrop for the first Antares flight from Wallops.

I love that neither the pad nor the horizon is visible. Only the gesture of going up remains. That tiny luminous dot is Antares already far away, on its test launch from pad 0A at MARS in Wallops, Virginia. It carries a simulated payload toward orbit and here it looks tiny against the smooth, cloudless blue sky. The whitish and grayish plume is its signature, narrow and defined below, faint and widened above. It is proof that something human, small, managed to draw a vertical line toward space.

It is almost all sky! Blue, blue everywhere, like a giant swimming pool. I have to look hard to find the rocket, it is a teeny tiny dot with a little white light underneath. It left a little line of white and gray smoke going up as if someone had drawn on the sky with chalk. Below it is thicker and above it gets thinner and fades away. It looks lonely and quiet, as if it were playing to see how high it can go.
