Black-and-white photograph, rear view from a slightly low angle, of a saucer-shaped aircraft inside a colossal wind tunnel. At the center, raised on three variable-height metal struts anchored to a platform, hovers the Avrocar: a circular disc with a smooth upper surface and a thickened rim, its underside exposed with a worn, slightly stained metallic texture from testing. A small tail fin protrudes at the rear. The supports, shaped as vertical columns with diagonal braces to the floor, cast sharp shadows. In the background, the dark cylindrical throat of the tunnel opens like a steel cavern, with curved walls, rivets, and reflections of artificial light. Above, the overhead doors of the test section are open, revealing walkways, steel girders, round ceiling lights, and a metal staircase on the left. The lighting is harsh and industrial, with strong contrast between the bright sheen of the disc and the deep gloom inside the tunnel. The scene conveys monumental scale and laboratory precision. Small details such as cables, oil stains on the wall, and the glossy floor complete the atmosphere of a technological trial.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the suspended disc and its circular shadow, then follow the three struts down to the ground. Notice the contrast between the metallic sheen of the Avrocar and the cavernous darkness of the tunnel behind it. Look for the small rear tail that breaks the perfect symmetry of the saucer and reveals its intent to be an airplane.

ContextContexto

Image dated April 3, 1961, taken by NASA at the Ames Research Center inside the 40x80 Foot Wind Tunnel. It shows the rear view of the Avrocar S/N 58-7055, marked AV-7055, mounted on variable-height struts with the overhead test-section doors open. According to source data, this first Avrocar, after tethered testing, became the wind-tunnel test model at Ames, where it remained in storage from 1961 to 1966. It was later donated to the National Air and Space Museum in Suitland, Maryland. The Avrocar was an experimental vertical take-off project originally developed by Avro Canada with United States military interest, now an example of saucer-flight experimentation during the Cold War.

Curious detailDato curioso

The 40x80 Foot Wind Tunnel at Ames where the Avrocar was photographed is one of the largest wind tunnels in the world and remains in use today to test everything from helicopters to scale models of future spacecraft.

The conservatorLa restauradora

Look closely at the disc, the black and white image reveals every trace of wear. The belly of the Avrocar is stained, with an uneven metallic texture from testing, and the thick rim shows how hard the material was pushed. The three struts holding it are not decoration, they are measuring tools. Notice the sharp shadows, the cables and those oil stains on the wall: they tell us this was a heavily tested object. The harsh light of the tunnel brings out every imperfection like a mark of technical history.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It looks like science fiction but it is a real laboratory from 1961. This saucer is Avrocar 58-7055, photographed from behind inside the giant 40 by 80 foot wind tunnel at Ames, with the upper doors open. It is not flying, it hovers on variable height struts while engineers study the airflow around it. During the Cold War many dreamed of flying saucers and here you see a serious attempt to build one that could take off vertically. It is the dream of space put to the test with steel and wind.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is a real flying saucer and it is trapped! It looks like a giant metal tortilla floating on three little sticks. I am down below looking at its belly and it has a tiny tail in the back. It lives inside a huge round cave made of steel with round lights above. It cannot escape because it is tied down, but they are blowing lots of wind to see if one day it will fly by itself. It looks shiny but also dirty, like it played a lot and did not take a bath.
