What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground, a partial replica of a flight cockpit dominates the view: a main instrument panel in off-white and pale gray, angled and densely packed with analog gauges, toggle switches, illuminated push buttons and dials. At the center sits an artificial horizon with a striped sphere, flanked by two black vertical tape indicators with white numerals, and below it a small compass. To the right, a prominent black ergonomic control stick rises from a silver base. On the left, a vertical auxiliary console in light blue, split into two stacked units, is covered with rectangular labeled buttons, red indicator lights and three black rotary knobs at the bottom. Above the main panel, an angled white arm bearing luminous buttons crosses diagonally. Behind it, a bulky black-cased CRT monitor with a grayish blank screen protrudes from the assembly. The background reveals an office-like room with an acoustic tile ceiling, long fluorescent lights, walls in muted greenish and gray tones, and a rolled map chart on the right. The lighting is cool and fluorescent, casting soft shadows. Plastic, metal and heavy cable textures are visible under the blue console. The scale is human-sized, a single-pilot station, looking like a functional mockup and prototype from the late 1970s or early 1980s.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the main panel and control stick at the heart of the cockpit, then move to the blue side tower with its rows of buttons. Notice the contrast between the precise instrumentation and the bulky CRT monitor behind it, which reveals the technology of the era.
ContextContexto
The source identifies the image as the Space Shuttle Simulator cockpit, photographed on July 15, 1980 and credited to NASA via the NASA Image and Video Library with credit NASA/AFRC (Armstrong Flight Research Center). No further details about exact location or operational use are given, but it dates from the development and training period before the first Columbia flight in 1981. Cockpit simulators were essential for astronaut training and flight systems testing on the ground, combining analog instrumentation with early synthetic vision systems. The medium is listed as photography / scientific image, typical of NASA institutional color documentation.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I focus on the materials and their apparent wear. The main panel in off-white and light gray shows plastics and metals with toggle switches, dials and illuminated buttons that would have required careful cleaning and preventive conservation. The light blue side console, split in two sections with black knobs and red lights, reveals thick cables underneath. The black-cased CRT monitor with its dull grayish screen speaks of analog technology vulnerable to humidity and dust. Everything suggests a functional 1980 prototype built to train without flying, and its value lies in that fragile, operational look.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
I see here the heart of training before Columbia in 1981. This 1980 simulator, photographed by NASA at its Armstrong center, condensed spaceflight into analog instruments. At the center, the artificial horizon with a striped sphere, flanked by two black vertical tape indicators with white numbers, taught orientation without seeing the sky. The black control stick on a silver base and the diagonal arm with illuminated buttons simulated real maneuvers. Behind, the bulky CRT monitor with its screen off foreshadowed early synthetic visuals for learning to orbit from the ground.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a movie spaceship cabin but it is real for practicing. There are so many tiny buttons, little levers and red lights everywhere, so you would never get bored. In the middle there is a striped little ball that is the artificial horizon and on the sides two black tapes with white numbers that look like magic rulers. On the right there is a really cool black joystick to steer. The big turned-off monitor behind makes me laugh, like an old TV. I imagine astronauts playing at being pilots here before going to real space.
