The image is almost square and shows a very dense star field on a deep black background. Thousands of tiny points cover the whole frame: most are white, but many shine in cold blue, warm orange or faint red, with varied brightness and a few larger, sharper pinpricks of light. Across the upper half and the edges run extensive red clouds, like smoke or translucent veils. At upper left the colour is intense and mottled; at upper right a large orange, rounded, bubble-like form appears, its edge finer and more luminous than its interior. The lower central area is strikingly dark, an irregular patch almost empty of nebulosity where only scattered stars can be seen, like a silhouette cut out against the red. From the right side, thin crimson filaments curl downward and inward, looping and fraying. At lower left and along the bottom there are further diffuse red patches. Just above the centre, amid a small group of blue and white stars, there is a very small pinkish-magenta knot, easy to miss among the crowd. There is no visible horizon or human reference: the scale can only be guessed, and the texture alternates between powdery grain, glassy points and gauzy, fibrous veils.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First let the eye wander across the red clouds, then look for the dark void in the lower centre, where the sky suddenly empties. Return to the centre and find the tiny magenta knot beside the blue stars: that small point changes the scale of everything around it. Finally, compare the gauzy veils with the sharp points of the stars.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a NASA/GSFC scientific image published on 8 December 2017, titled 'The Dawn of a New Era for Supernova 1987a'. It concerns Supernova 1987A (SN 1987A), discovered on 23 February 1987 in the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud. It was one of the brightest exploding stars seen in more than 400 years and shone with the power of 100 million suns for several months. The source explains that, after three decades of observation, its shock wave was moving beyond a dense ring of gas formed late in the life of the star before it exploded. What lay beyond that ring was still poorly known.

Curious detailDato curioso

SN 1987A is the nearest supernova explosion observed in hundreds of years, so astronomers have been able to follow the phases before, during and after the death of a single star in unusual detail.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does it do to our sense of scale to know that the most important event in the image may be one of its smallest points?¿Qué le pasa a nuestra idea de escala cuando sabemos que el suceso más importante de la imagen puede ser uno de sus puntos más pequeños?
  2. How do we read as one landscape things that in reality lie at enormously different distances?¿Cómo leemos como un solo paisaje cosas que en realidad están a distancias enormes entre sí?
  3. What changes in an image of the sky when we observe it not as a single instant but across thirty years?¿Qué cambia en una imagen del cielo cuando la observamos no como un instante, sino a lo largo de treinta años?

I pause on how the tiny and the vast meet here. The deep black background is packed with thousands of dots in white, cool blue and warm orange, some crisp, others softer, like glass dust. Up top, translucent red veils spread across, speckled and puffed into a rounded orange bubble with a brighter rim. Below, a dark empty patch cuts the glow and shows only scattered stars. Near the center, that tiny magenta pink knot hides among blue suns. Everything feels fragile, threadlike, asking for slow, careful looking.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I would never catch this so sharp from my balcony, so this view of Supernova 1987A thrills me. I read it is dated December 8 2017, thirty years after it burst on February 23 1987 in the Large Magellanic Cloud and shone like 100 million suns. I hunt for the dense gas ring the source describes and that tiny magenta knot near the center among blue and white stars. I picture the shock wave finally passing the ring into little known space, while red clouds still fill the top and edges.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone spilled glitter on the sky! I see a black background with tons of tiny dots shining in white, blue and orange, like sprinkles. On top there are red clouds like strawberry smoke, and on the right a big orange bubble with a bright edge. At the bottom there is a dark empty hole with no clouds, just lonely little stars. I have to hunt super close for the teeny magenta pink dot in the middle because it hides among the blue ones. I want to count stars forever.

  1. #1

What color are the large veil-like or smoke-like clouds dominating the upper part of the image?

    HintPista

Look up where the black background almost disappears behind translucent veils.

  2. #2

In the central area, among a little group of blue and white stars, what tiny intensely colored dot should you look for?

    HintPista

It is not a big star, it is a pinkish dot that hides in the crowded center.

  3. #3

How does the lower central area look compared to the rest: is it full of red haze or does it look like a dark gap with few stars?

    HintPista

Lower your gaze to the bottom center and you will see a dark cutout against the red.
