What you would seeLo que verías

This is an oblique orbital grayscale photograph of Mercury's surface, rugged and Moon-like in appearance. Dominating the lower foreground is a large, circular impact crater with a raised, heavily textured rim; its interior lies in partial shadow, with low sunlight casting long, crisp shadows across the crater floor, where small, clustered central peaks stand out as bright, blocky knobs. The rim appears terraced and jagged, with ejecta material spreading outward in faint radial patterns. Extending toward the background, the plains are pockmarked with countless smaller craters of varying sizes, some as deep dark pits with sharp shadows, others as subtle bright-rimmed dimples. Sinuous ridges, shallow grooves and a fine granular texture cover the terrain, revealed by the grazing illumination that emphasizes small-scale topography. The contrast between stark white highlights on sun-facing slopes and deep black shadows creates a dramatic, three-dimensional relief, with no atmosphere or color, conveying a stark, ancient and airless landscape captured with scientific clarity.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large foreground crater and trace its bright rim to notice terraces and ejecta. Look at the long shadows of the central peaks to appreciate depth. Then scan the background to compare sharp, fresh small craters with softer, degraded ones.

ContextContexto

The image features the Hokusai crater on Mercury, noted in the source description for its extensive bright ray system extending over a thousand kilometers, indicating it is one of the youngest large craters on the planet. It was acquired by the MDIS instrument aboard NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft as part of the high-incidence-angle base map, at an average resolution of 200 meters per pixel. According to the source, MESSENGER was the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury and collected over 150,000 images during its first two years of orbital operations. The low sun angle produces long shadows to accentuate topography. Credit is given to NASA, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and the Carnegie Institution of Washington, with a publication date of December 8, 2017.

Curious detailDato curioso

Hokusai crater, seen here, is named after Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and its ray system is so prominent that it was first spotted in ground-based telescopic observations before MESSENGER arrived at Mercury.

  1. What do the long shadows tell you about exploring an airless world with low sunlight?¿Qué te dice la presencia de sombras tan largas sobre la forma de explorar un mundo sin atmósfera?
  2. How does knowing the rays stretch for over a thousand kilometers change your sense of scale?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la escala al saber que los rayos de este cráter miden más de mil kilómetros?

I focus on the grazing light and how it reveals every texture. I look at the rim of the large crater in the foreground, with its eroded terraces and ejected material spreading radially. The central peaks appear as irregular bright blocks on a partially shadowed floor. I am drawn to the extreme contrast between intense whites and deep blacks, typical of a grayscale image with no atmosphere, and how the long shadows help us read the granular topography and sinuous ridges.

This is Hokusai crater on Mercury, captured obliquely by the MDIS camera on the MESSENGER spacecraft. I love knowing it was the first probe to orbit Mercury and that in its first two years it returned more than 150,000 images. This one belongs to its high incidence angle base map, at 200 meters per pixel. Although the dramatic black and white relief dominates here, the source notes that Hokusai is one of the youngest large craters because of its bright ray system extending over a thousand kilometers.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the Moon but it is Mercury and it has no air or colors. At the bottom there is a giant crater like a huge cup with a rough rim and tiny bright peaks inside. The Sun is very low and makes super long shadows that look like nighttime. Behind it there are so many little holes, some dark and some light, and the ground looks scratchy like sand with little lines. Everything is gray, white and black, and it looks very lonely and very old.
