What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a deep star field floats an almost perfect sphere of tenuous gas, translucent red with filaments like wrinkled silk or a soap bubble about to burst. The bubble occupies roughly a third of the image height and sits slightly left of center. Its lower rim is sharp and luminous, like a thread of crimson neon, while its upper edge frays into pale veils and irregular ripples. Inside the sphere, the background star field appears dimmed, filtered through the gas. The exterior is an absolute black velvet speckled with hundreds of points of light: white, bluish and a few yellowish stars. In the lower right quadrant a small group of bright stars shows cross-shaped diffraction spikes, an optical effect of the telescope. The light is cold and pinpoint, without atmosphere, with extreme contrast between the darkness of the void and the delicate glow of the remnant. The gas texture is gauzy and fibrous, with subtle folds and curls that suggest expansive motion frozen in time.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First take in the red sphere as a whole shape, then trace its bright lower rim and compare it to the diffuse, wavy upper edge. Notice how the stars behind the bubble look veiled: that veil is the history of an explosion still expanding.
ContextContexto
The image shows supernova remnant SNR 0509-67.5, also known as SNR 0509, photographed by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. It is the visible shell of a stellar explosion that occurred about 400 years ago in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small galaxy about 160,000 light-years from Earth. The gas bubble is 23 light-years across and expanding at more than 5,000 kilometers per second. Astronomers classify it as a Type Ia supernova, caused by a white dwarf in a binary system that accreted too much mass and exploded. The picture combines data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys on Oct. 28, 2006 and the Wide Field Camera 3 on Nov. 4, 2010, first released on Dec. 14, 2010.

Curious detailDato curioso
This supernova is the same Type Ia used by astronomers as standard candles to measure the accelerated expansion of the universe, and its nearly perfect spherical shell suggests it exploded with unusual symmetry.

I look at this sphere and think about how fragile time is. What you see as a red soap bubble is gas that has been expanding for 400 years and still holds its almost perfect shape, 23 light-years across. It moves me how the lower edge glows like a sharply defined crimson neon thread, while the upper edge frays into pale veils. It is matter in motion at more than 5,000 kilometers per second, photographed by Hubble and suspended here like a delicate textile that we must learn to preserve with our gaze.

This bubble is the remnant SNR 0509-67.5, the ghost of a Type Ia supernova that exploded about 400 years ago in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 160,000 light-years away from us. What Hubble captured with its Advanced Camera for Surveys in 2006 and its Wide Field Camera 3 in 2010 is a white dwarf that could not hold more mass and blew up. Notice how the background stars look filtered inside the reddish sphere and how outside the void is absolute black. It is a shock wave frozen in an image published on December 14, 2010.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant bubble of red bubble gum floating in the darkness. It is huge, almost a third of the whole picture, and it is a little off to the left. At the bottom it has a super bright edge as if it were drawn with a marker, and at the top it gets soft like a torn curtain. If you peek inside you see blurry little stars, like when you look through a glass of red water. Outside there are lots of shiny dots and some little stars with tiny crosses that wink at me. It is a space bubble!
