What you would seeLo que verías

The image is a diptych set against a deep black background, presenting two views of the same spherical body, Saturn's moon Mimas, in direct contrast. On the left, in grayscale, Mimas appears in visible light: a densely cratered sphere with a rough, matte texture and strong shadows that reveal topography. The large Herschel crater dominates the lower right quadrant, a ring of steep walls and irregular floor resembling a lunar basin, surrounded by smaller craters and pale plains. Light comes from the upper right, modeling volume with a soft terminator. On the right, the same moon is rendered as a thermal map in psychedelic false colors: its outline is diffuse with a dark blue halo. The interior blends intense yellow, orange and red at the periphery forming a wide open «C» shape, like an open mouth biting, wrapping around a cold center in violet, blue and pale pink tones. Two smaller warm spots float near the mouth. Craters remain visible beneath the color, creating a tinted relief texture. The composition is symmetrical and didactic, like a comparative scientific chart, inviting side-by-side reading of photography versus data visualization.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Look first at the gray globe on the left to register craters and volume, then move to the colored globe on the right and trace the yellow «C» shape. Notice how craters persist under the color and how the contrast between photographic and thermal views shifts the reading from landscape to data.

ContextContexto

The image comes from NASA and was originally released on March 29, 2010, based on data from the Cassini spacecraft, credited to NASA/JPL/Goddard/SWRI/SSI. The left side shows Mimas in visible light; the right side shows the highest-resolution temperature map available at the time. According to the source description, this map revealed unexpected patterns, including warm regions resembling the video game character Pac-Man eating a dot and striking light and dark bands on crater walls. Mimas is a small, icy, heavily cratered moon of Saturn, widely noted for its resemblance to the Death Star from Star Wars because of the Herschel crater. The thermal colors are not natural but a scientific code to visualize temperature differences.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Pac-Man pattern reflects real differences in thermal inertia on the icy surface, where colder and warmer zones are distributed in a way that surprised earlier models.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What makes us see a face or a character in an abstract temperature map?¿Qué nos hace reconocer una cara o un personaje en un mapa de temperaturas abstracto?
  2. How does our sense of a distant place change when we see it both as a photo and as thermal data?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de un lugar lejano cuando lo vemos a la vez como foto y como dato térmico?
  3. What other everyday shapes do we project onto moons and planets to make them understandable?¿Qué otras formas cotidianas proyectamos sobre lunas y planetas para hacerlos comprensibles?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I look at the diptych as if it were a conservation comparison. On the left I see the real texture: rough grays, deep shadows and the large Herschel crater with its sharp walls. On the right the same relief appears tinted in yellows, oranges and violets that are not paint but temperature translated into color. I love how the image keeps the craters visible under the false color, letting the original form breathe beneath the scientific layer. It is a before and after that does not restore, but reveals.

This pair fascinates me because it is Mimas in two languages. On the left, visible light: an icy, ancient ball full of impacts, with Herschel dominating like a huge scar. On the right, the 2010 Cassini thermal map, the highest resolution at that time. The yellows and reds are not hot rock but slightly warmer regions, forming that C-shape we all see as Pac-Man. It is pure pareidolia, but also physics: violet for cold and yellow for heat shows how that icy surface retains warmth.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the moon wants to eat something! On the left it is gray and full of little holes like a bumpy cookie, with a giant crater that looks like a belly button. On the right it is the same moon but painted like a video game, with a yellow and orange mouth wide open and a cold purple center. I like that you can still see the holes even when it is colorful. It is like they put rainbow pajamas on the moon to see if it is cold or warm. And it really does look like Pac-Man!

¡Y sí parece Pac-Man!
