What you would seeLo que verías

Top-down orbital view of an elongated, curved atoll floating in the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean, photographed from low Earth orbit. The island stretches horizontally across the center in a stretched crescent shape, its outer edge marked by a thin white line of surf that separates the reef from the open sea. The interior is dominated by a lagoon of mottled turquoise and light blue, with darker patches and sandy tan finger-like forms that are the tops of barely submerged corals. Around the lagoon lies a broken ring of land: irregular islets in dark green and light brown, covered with vegetation, made of limestone and sand. The two largest islets stand out at the northern and southern tips. The surrounding ocean is a uniform deep navy, dotted with fluffy white clouds, especially toward the upper left and lower left corner, casting soft shadows on the water. The light is bright, even daylight typical of orbital photography, with no visible horizon; the scale conveys isolation and fragility, with subtle details such as the gradient between shallow and deep water and the granular texture of the reefs.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the dark ocean and the bright turquoise lagoon. Trace the ring of land and spot the two largest islets at the ends. Finally notice the small clouds and the pale coral fingers inside the lagoon that reveal how shallow and alive the reef is.

ContextContexto

Photograph taken on July 1, 2009 by astronaut Koichi Wakata, crew member of Expedition 20 aboard the International Space Station, catalogued as ISS020-E-016279. It shows Millennium Island — known as Caroline Island before 2000 — at the southern end of the Line Islands in the South Pacific. According to NASA/JSC data, it is an uninhabited atoll of the Republic of Kiribati, formed by small islets built on coral reefs that grew around a now-submerged volcanic peak, enclosing an inner lagoon. Its maximum elevation is about 6 meters above sea level, so it has been identified by the United Nations as highly vulnerable to sea-level rise. Its ecosystem is considered relatively pristine.

Curious detailDato curioso

Millennium Island was among the first places on Earth to see sunrise in the year 2000, which led to its renaming from Caroline Island to Millennium Island.

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my perspective as a restorer I see how fragile this place is. This thin ring of green islets and pale sand surrounded by the deep blue Pacific rises only about six meters above the sea. The 2009 orbital photograph shows the turquoise lagoon, the reef and the patches of coral with sharp clarity. Everything looks pristine and untouched, yet also very vulnerable to time and rising waters. To preserve here is to remember that beauty depends on balance.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me most is the point of view: this photo was taken on July 1, 2009 by Koichi Wakata from the International Space Station, hundreds of kilometers up. With no horizon, just the crescent-shaped atoll floating in the ocean, with clouds and their shadows cast on the water. Seeing Caroline Island, now Millennium Island, from orbit reminds us how space exploration lets us understand Earth and locate a remote atoll of Kiribati in the middle of the South Pacific.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a donut floating in a giant swimming pool! The island is like a crescent moon made of little green dots and sand, with a turquoise lagoon in the middle where you can see coral patches. Around it everything is dark navy blue and there are fluffy white clouds making little shadows on the sea. I love that it is seen from space, as if an astronaut took the picture from a window up there. It is all alone in the ocean and looks very tiny and special.

  1. #1

If you look at the center of the image, what elongated and curved shape does the ring of islets and reef form around the turquoise lagoon?

    HintPista

Think of an island that is not round or square, but like a thin smile in the middle of the ocean.

  2. #2

In this view from orbit, what white and fluffy elements float over the navy blue ocean and cast soft shadows on the water?

    HintPista

They are mostly at the top and at the bottom left corner, and they also appear with their shadow.

  3. #3

Inside the atoll, what body of clear turquoise water is dotted with sand tongues and coral crests?

    HintPista

It is the interior of the ring, lighter blue than the deep ocean surrounding the island.
