Hurricane Edouard, Seen from OrbitEl huracán Edouard, visto desde la órbita

What you would seeLo que verías
The horizontal photograph, taken from very high above, shows an immense spiral of cloud filling almost the entire frame. Near the center, slightly above the middle, the hurricane's eye opens: a gray-blue oval, sunken and relatively clear, surrounded by a ring of denser cloud. From there, milky white bands sweep in broad turns toward the edges, like circular brushstrokes gradually thinning out. The texture shifts between smooth, satiny areas and cottony, streaked patches dotted with small lumps. In the foreground at the bottom, the cloud cover becomes more broken and reveals fragments of dark ocean, ranging from deep blue to gray. In the background at the top runs a narrow band of atmosphere: intense blue fading toward the horizon, and above it, the black of space. Along that distant line sit a few small, isolated clouds with soft shadows. The light is diffuse, even daylight, with no hard shadows on the storm, emphasizing whites and pale grays. There are no people, buildings, or direct references for scale; the magnitude is sensed from the distant curvature and from a spiral so large it seems not to fit inside the image.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the dark band of space at the top, then drop down to the small, sunken oval at the center: that contrast gives you the scale. Follow the cloud bands as they unwind toward the edges and notice how orderly they look from above. Finally, look at the lower edge, where the cover breaks apart and the dark ocean appears.
ContextContexto
According to the source record from the NASA Image and Video Library, with credit to NASA/JSC, this photograph was taken by Alex Gerst, a crewmember of Expedition 41, on September 16, 2014, and shows Hurricane Edouard. Expedition 41 was a crew rotation aboard the International Space Station, from whose orbital altitude Earth can be photographed far above the weather. Hurricanes are tropical cyclones organized around a relatively clear eye. The record does not specify the camera, the exact location over the ocean at that moment, or the storm's category at the time, so those details are not known from this file; the image was probably made for scientific observation and public outreach.

Curious detailDato curioso
In a mature hurricane, the eye — the feature that looks most threatening here — is paradoxically the calmest area, with light winds and sinking air, while the fiercest winds are concentrated in the ring of clouds immediately around it.

- How does the perception of a hurricane change when it is seen from orbit rather than from the ground?¿Cómo cambia la percepción de un huracán cuando se lo ve desde la órbita y no desde el suelo?

I focus on the texture of this immense spiral captured from orbit. I notice milky whites and pale grays alternating between smooth, satiny areas and fluffier clumps with subtle striations. At the center, the gray-blue oval eye looks sunken and relatively clear, encircled by a denser ring. Below you can glimpse dark patches of ocean between deep blue and gray. Above, the atmosphere becomes an intense blue band fading toward the blackness of space.

From the height of the International Space Station, Alex Gerst photographed Hurricane Edouard on September 16, 2014 during Expedition 41. What amazes me is the scale with no human reference. The storm fills the horizontal frame and only the distant curvature of the planet hints at its size. Above, the thin band of atmosphere stands out against the blackness of space. This NASA view supports observation and outreach about weather seen from outside.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a giant seashell made of clouds. In the middle there is a little gray-blue eye as if the storm were looking at us. Around it white bands swirl like brushstrokes going round and round. Below the dark ocean peeks through the clouds and above you see a thin blue line which is Earth's air and then the black of space. There are no people or houses, just huge clouds spinning in daylight.
