What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal view from high above Earth fills the frame with deep blue ocean and, in the center, the large island of Ireland. The land appears in muted gray-green and dull brown tones, flatter and more matte than the surrounding water, which shifts from dark navy at the edges to a brighter teal below the island. The western coast, on the left, is deeply cut by inlets and long, finger-like peninsulas reaching into the sea; the southern coast, along the bottom of the landmass, forms a much smoother, straighter line. Toward the upper right of the interior, a few small, dark, irregular patches mark inland lakes. Broken white clouds scatter across the upper left and top edge, thinning into small speckles over the ocean, with a denser white band just entering at the right edge. Daylight is even and bright, with no visible buildings, roads, people, or text to give a human scale—the island reads first as a single textured shape. Tiny variations in the land's surface hint at fields, hills, and settlements, but they dissolve into a soft, grainy pattern at this distance.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the coastline from the indented western edge to the smoother southern shore, and notice how clearly the island's shape emerges without any borders or labels. Then look for the small dark lakes inland and the broken clouds over the ocean. That contrast between the solid landmass and the scattered white patches changes the image from a map into a passing, momentary view.

This photograph was taken on March 13, 2015, by Terry Virts, a member of the Expedition 43 crew aboard the International Space Station, according to the NASA Image and Video Library (NASA/JSC). It shows Ireland during a daytime pass over the Earth. NASA shared it in a message wishing people a happy St. Patrick's Day and noting that, from space, the “Emerald Isle” really does look green. No more precise information about the camera or the exact time of day is given in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso
The International Space Station completes one orbit around Earth in roughly 90 minutes, so a view like this—an entire island framed by ocean and moving clouds—lasts only a very short time before the station has moved on.

From my worktable I focus on the texture of this shot: the ocean shifts from dark navy to pale turquoise beneath the island, and the land appears in muted grayish greens and opaque browns, matte and grainy. I am drawn to how the even daylight preserves those hues without oversaturating them and how the fragmented clouds in the upper left corner almost fade over the water. I notice the sharp edges of the deeply indented western coast against the smooth southern line. It is a serene image that asks to be viewed slowly.

As a sky watcher I love that this was taken on March 13, 2015 from the International Space Station by Terry Virts of Expedition 43 during a daytime pass. From that height we see no buildings or roads, just the full shape of Ireland as a soft texture amid the ocean. The dark patches toward the upper right inland are lakes, and the dense white band at the right edge is cloud. NASA shared it for Saint Patrick's Day saying the Emerald Isle really does look green from space, a reminder of how special our planet appears from orbit.

It looks like Ireland is floating in a giant swimming pool! The water is dark navy at the edges and turns light turquoise right under the island. The left coast has lots of little points like fingers dipping into the sea and the bottom one is nice and straight. At the upper right there are dark little spots that are hidden lakes. There are fluffy white clouds like cotton scattered at the top and a thicker stripe coming in from the right. You cannot see any little houses because we are super far away in space.

According to what is visible, on which side of the island is the coast deeply indented with finger-like peninsulas and on which side is it smoother and straighter?
HintPista
Look at the edges of the landmass: one side looks like an open hand and the other like an almost straight line
#2
In the upper right inland part of the island, what dark irregular patches can be spotted according to the record?
HintPista
They are dark shapes inside the land, not in the ocean or clouds
#3
In which corner are the fragmented white clouds scattered and where does the denser white band enter?
HintPista
Look top left for the speckles and then to the far right for the more solid white area
